Flat tire stops theft of scrap metal
FLORESVILLE -- Vicente Hernandez, 33, and his brother-in-law, Raynaldo Pacheco Jr., 33, were arrested Nov. 18 for the theft of more than 3,000 pounds of scrap metal from the Texaloy Foundry.
Hernandez, a Texaloy employee, and Pacheco loaded the scrap metal onto a trailer, and Pacheco drove off with it, according to a police report.
Enrique Garcia, a Texaloy supervisor, saw Pacheco leave the premises and began to follow him in his vehicle, the police report said. Garcia also notified the Floresville Police Department.
Pacheco turned on to Peach Street, where his overloaded trailer had a flat tire.
Floresville police officer Ruben Leal arrived at the scene and began to question Pacheco. Wilson County Sheriff’s Deputy Clint Garza picked up Hernandez at the foundry and took him to Peach Street, where officers continued questioning both men, who were then both arrested.
Texaloy uses scrap metal as an ingredient in the foundry process. Metal prices, including scrap metal, have risen a great deal in the past year. The stolen 3,000 pounds are valued at more than $500.
The two men were charged with theft of less than $1,500, a Class B misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $2,000 and up to 180 days in jail.
