FLORESVILLE -- Gilberto Cortez, 34, led local police on a high-speed chase on the evening of Feb. 19.

The chase lasted for nearly 10 minutes, covered a territory of more than five miles, and reached speeds greater than 100 mph, according to Assistant police Chief Andy Joslin. Cortez lost control of his vehicle north of the city, near the Avalon subdivision. He was airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio where he remains in the intensive care unit.

The series of events began when Officer Dan Small, of the Floresville Police Department, was dispatched to a home on Fourth Street following a report of a domestic disturbance.

Small contacted the wife of the man who was later the subject of the chase, and learned that the couple had been arguing. According to his wife, Small said, Cortez had been drinking and drove into the home by accident. He had attempted to reverse out of the driveway, but instead went forward, pushing a washing machine that was in front of the home into the structure. His wife told Small that he was angry and she was afraid the argument would escalate.

Officers started looking for Cortez throughout the city, Small said. Family members stated Cortez had made threats, so Small returned to the home as he felt it was likely Cortez would return. Within 15 minutes of the officer’s first appearance at the scene, Cortez did in fact return.

Small attempted to speak with him, and that’s when Cortez put his car in gear. At this point Small, fearing for his safety, drew his weapon and ordered Cortez to stop, but Cortez refused and drove off.

After checking with Sgt. Alex Cantu, the supervisor on duty, and determining the situation followed departmental policy regarding pursuits, a chase ensued involving six units from the Floresville Police Department, the Department of Public Safety, and the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office.

The chase concluded when Cortez lost control of his vehicle. Due to the impact of the accident, it took some time to free Cortez from his vehicle. He was then airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio, Joslin said.

“It’s unfortunate it had to come down to this. It’s not at all what we anticipate when we go out on a call,” Small said.

Cortez remained in the intensive care unit through Feb. 22, when his wife said he was scheduled to be released, Joslin said.

He is not currently in the custody of the Floresville Police Department. When a warrant is issued for his arrest, he will face charges of evading arrest and/or detention by use of a vehicle, and reckless driving. Each of these are misdemeanor offenses. Joslin is quick to add, this is an ongoing investigation, and other charges could be added. Cortez has several previous arrests for assault, one for driving while intoxicated, and other miscellaneous offenses, Joslin said.
