FLORESVILLE (revised 6/18/07) -- Seven illegal immigrants from Honduras led police on a chase the night of June 3. Police caught five of them before the remaining two showed up on a city policeman’s doorstep.

According to police reports, a Poth Police Department patrol car was transporting a person in custody from Falls City to Floresville on U.S. 181. The Poth officer observed a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that was having trouble staying in its lane, and then run a stop sign. The officer radioed ahead to the police department to advise of the suspicious driver. At this point, he believed three subjects to be in the truck.

Officer Daniel Small was the first Floresville officer on the scene. He observed the truck enter the city limits with the Poth patrol unit still following. Small aligned his own patrol car behind the truck.

He paced the truck and gauged its speed to be 55 mph. The limit was 40 mph.

Small activated his car’s police lights and the truck pulled over to the shoulder, but did not slow down. Sirens also had no effect.

Only after the truck passed vehicles at the C Street traffic light did it begin to slow, Small’s report said.

The driver jumped out of the truck and let it continue to roll forward. Small pursued the driver on foot east on B Street.

Sgt. Alex Cantu arrived in his patrol vehicle and joined the foot chase. Cantu was in front, so Small returned to round up the other subjects.

Small’s report said the truck had come to a rest at a brick fence. He saw at least four other subjects exit the truck at this point. They ran behind a local business and jumped a chain-link fence. Another fled north on U.S. 181, but hadn’t traveled 100 yards before responding Wilson County sheriff’s deputies apprehended him.

Responding units caught five illegal immigrants in total. The truck’s driver told police another two were still on the loose.

These other two illegal immigrants were quickly caught.

Having run onto B Street, the two remaining immigrants went to a house to ask for food and water. The homeowner offered them chicken, water, and rest.

What they did not know is that the homeowner was the city police department’s Assistant Chief Andy Joslin. Joslin called the department and kept the immigrants at his home until officers arrived.

“They scared my wife pretty good,” Joslin said.

The Floresville chief of police, Daniel Martinez, said the immigrants had probably been hiding in some woods along B Street and had chosen Joslin’s home because the front light was still on.

This was the third incident in Floresville involving illegal immigrants in the past six months. This is a higher rate than normal, Martinez said, since most are caught closer to the border.

Detective Jesse Evins explained that state agencies such as the city police or sheriff’s office cannot detain immigrants for having illegally crossed the border, since this is a federal offense. Therefore, the police arrested the immigrants on charges of evading arrest and detention.

When officials from the Immigration and Naturalization Service arrived to take custody of the seven immigrants, their charges superceded the charges lodged against the immigrants by the police.
