FLORESVILLE -- George Ortiz is the Floresville Police Department’s new detective after the resignation of Jesse Evins. Ortiz, 35, said he is very proud and did not expect to earn the rank until later in his career.

Ortiz got his start by attending the San Antonio Police Academy. He worked two years as a corrections officer before being hired by the Poth Police Department. It was only two months later, in 2001, that he accepted a job with Floresville.

He initially worked as an officer with the Floresville Independent School District, before the district formed its own police department. Ortiz said he received his most valuable training there, developing good relationships within the community of students and gathering information from those relationships.

Ortiz said his commanding officer at the time, retired Lt. Investigator Alex Lopez, had told Ortiz he had a knack for investigation.

“He said he knew one day I’d be a detective,” Ortiz said.

Oftentimes tips Ortiz received at the school assisted the police in solving larger crimes in the Floresville community.

Ortiz knows both sides of this relationship, since he helped the police at his west side San Antonio school growing up, helping with information about crimes and making sure they were aware of gang fights that had been planned.

“Ever since I was in high school, I wanted to be a police officer,” Ortiz said.

In a society where informing police grows ever more unpopular, Ortiz said, “When there’s people planning to do bad, you’ve got to step up and take the challenge to do the right thing.”

Ortiz said he thinks getting the community to feel better about calling the police can help prevent crime. He encourages people to call the police about any suspicious activity, even anonymously.

“It’s no bother for us,” he said, adding that catching criminals early also helps to remove the extra burden from police once criminals have gotten better at what they do.

Ortiz also said, “I would like, every once in a while, to give presentations to students … I enjoyed that, but we don’t receive calls from the school anymore.” He said the school often runs its own valuable programs, but that the police department would be glad to assist with stranger awareness, drug prevention, and other programs at different education levels.

He would also like to educate retailers about how to identify fake identification and stop check forgery.

“This is a great opportunity for me,” Ortiz said of his new position.

He expressed his thanks to Chief Danny Martinez, Assistant Chief Andy Joslin, and Detective Chad Clark for all they have taught him, as well as his appreciation to Lopez and the others who have helped him along the way to earn his new detective rank.
