FLORESVILLE -- A tanker truck flipped onto its side on U.S. 181 at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Oct. 4, tying up city traffic along the busy road.

Traveling west on S.H. 97, the truck made a right-hand turn too quickly, shifting the liquid inside of it to one side and causing the truck to tip over onto the driver’s side, Floresville Police Department Chief Danny Martinez said. Martinez acted as safety coordinator at the scene.

The truck carried unprocessed crude oil. Because the pumping connection on top of the truck had only been hand-tightened, oil leaked onto the road. The total amount spilled was less than 3 gallons, Martinez said.

The driver was taken to Connally Memorial Medical Center in Floresville for treatment of injuries. None were severe.

Some oil was pumped out of the truck to lighten the load, allowing San Antonio-based Commercial Towing to prop the truck at a 45-degree angle. This allowed authorities to pump more oil out into other tankers, making the truck easier to tow.

The truck rocked a little bit when they finally set it upright again, Martinez said. The scene was cleared by 8 p.m.

“It was unfortunate that drivers were inconvenienced due to the rerouting of traffic,” Assistant Chief Andy Joslin said, “but it was done to avoid public injury.”

Two minor accidents occurred due to the bumper-to-bumper traffic, Martinez said. Crashes occurred at Peach and Fourth streets and in front of the Sonic on U.S. 181. One woman was transported to Connally Memorial Medical Center for minor injuries.

Aside from the Floresville Floresville Police Department, the Floresville Volunteer Fire Department, Wilson County Emergency Management Agency, Department of Public Safety, Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Transportation, and Floresville Independent School District police responded to the accident.
