ELMENDORF -- The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office has been attempting to piece together the details involving the murder of an unidentified man whose burning body was found Jan. 16 southwest of here.

According to Detective John Mahon, at approximately 12:30 a.m. a female motorist in the area of the intersection of F.M. 1303 and Loop 1604 called in a report of a brush fire.

“Then there was a guy who saw the fire, pulled over, and tried beating it out with a blanket,” Mahon said. “Then when the flames died down, he saw the body and freaked out.”

Deputies and volunteer firefighters responded to the area, and the fire was quickly extinguished.

Mahon said the victim’s death was caused by a single gunshot wound from a semi-automatic handgun. It is unknown whether the murder occurred there or at another location, but blood and a spent shell casing were found on the ground near the body.

Because the body was so badly burned, Mahon said investigators are still trying to determine the victim’s identity. But investigators were able to determine the victim was wearing items of clothing that included a black T-shirt that read “Viva México” on the back, which was underneath a Tommy Hilfiger sweater or sweatshirt. He was also wearing Fila shoes.

“He had tattoos on both sides of his upper back and left shoulder,” Mahon said.

At press time Monday, Mahon said the sheriff’s homicide division was working to prepare an artist’s rendering of the tattoos, in hopes that someone might be able to identify to whom they belong.

Police are also awaiting the results of fingerprints testing.

“We don’t know his age yet,
Mahon said. “We don’t know about his height and weight. He was burned pretty badly. We’re still doing follow-up with other police departments and checking their missing-persons reports.”

In the days following the incident, Mahon said, no information has come in that would offer police a glimpse into the victim’s identity.

A spokesperson from the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office would not release information about the case until the body has been identified and next of kin has been notified.

Anyone with information is asked to call 210-335-6085.
