Using the word ‘democrat’
Editor:
Words have meanings and the media has no authority to change them.

I have noticed a recent trend when the media report on the Democrat Party. I have yet to find a media outlet, to include the Wilson County News, which correctly refers to the Democrat Party as the Democrat Party. On page A3 of the Jan. 16 Wilson County News is a photo titled “Democrats draw.” The opening sentence begins with “Members of the Wilson County Democratic Party.” The political party in question is the Democrat Party, not the Democratic Party.

Let’s have a quick grammar lesson. A political party is an organization, which is a noun. The word democrat is also a noun, therefore Democrat Party is correct. The word democratic is an adjective, which in this case would describe the organization. Hillary Clinton would say she is a Democrat, not a Democratic. On occasion, I have called my Democrat friends “Democratics” just to make this point.

Mistakes happen occasionally, not continuously. I can only assume that the media are either ignorant or biased. If they are ignorant, hopefully this editorial will enlighten all and help bring about change. If, on the other hand, they mean to imply that the only political party with democratic values is the Democrat Party, then we will know where their true allegiance lies.

My hope is that all media outlets will correctly refer to our two major political parties as the Democrat Party and the Republican Party.

By the way, Article IV, Section 4, of the U.S. Constitution guarantees our nation and all states a “republican (small r) form of government.” Our founders preferred and mandated a republic -- which our nation and state is -- over a democracy.

Research candidates before voting
Editor:
Re: What is wrong in America: In the words of Martin Luther King, Jan. 16

Elaine Kolodziej has just given the utmost respect to the civil rights leaders of this country, praising and agreeing with what they have done for all of us. She has given her wish to have equal representation of values, work values, and judgments, no matter of skin color or nationality.

Some have taken this as a racial statement. Why? Because they think everything is racial. For some reason, the color or gender of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama appeal to some voters more than their agendas.

I challenge each and every one of you to diligently pray and seek wisdom from above before you do this. Please research your candidates. If you are looking for change, you may just get change you do not want.

Consider voting for Alan Keyes, for example, if you are seeking to vote because of race. He is a black man who is conservative to the core and would sit down and pray with you.

Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are socialists and seek to lead this country in a direction worse than President Carter and Bill Clinton.

Do you remember the days when most of us could hardly afford groceries? Beware; the social programs that these Democrats want to impose on us are going to siphon your wallet.

And last of all, don’t forget: This is your America. You need to vote for what you want and expect out of your leaders.

If big government, socialist agendas, and less money in your wallet are what you want, then go ahead, you have the right to vote for Clinton or Obama, no matter what color or gender they are.

Parents, taxpayers must hold all our schools accountable
Editor:
Re: Texans should change how they fund public schools, Jan. 16

What happened to all the funds that Ann Richards promised would go toward public education by instituting the Texas lottery?

As a parent of a child in middle school, I can see enormous “breaks” in the system of education now in place. As an individual, I feel powerless to change the system and I have no specific answer that would be an improvement.

Our education system is in dire need of a complete overhaul from the top down -- and I do mean the top, that portion that is over-hired with administrators who make too much money for what their job requirements are.

The citizens who are suffering are not necessarily just those who are overburdened with taxes, but the students, who should be receiving a level of education that is equal to or better than any child who is home-schooled.

When, as parents and taxpayers, are we going to unite and ask the school districts to be accountable? There are many problems, many questions, and too few credible answers.

Internet users not all ‘lost in cyberspace’
Editor:
Re: “One Opinion: Newspapers caught in the throes of communication revolution,” Jan. 23

I disagree with your very general assessment of the Internet and “getting lost in cyberspace,” although I don’t deny the possibility for many people to do just as the editorial states.

This medium is like any other product available to consumers. “An intelligent consumer is a smart shopper.”

A person can make of the Internet and the news/information available there in whatever manner he or she wants to. If you do the research correctly and siphon out the real info from the fraudulent or misrepresented data, you are doing your homework and are in the light of the truth.

As for not being involved in community activities because you are in “cyberspace,” I am the example that disproves this theory.

I know where to get the truth and facts on the Internet, I write about the truth to inform various communities regarding the urgent issues, and I also provide individuals and groups with the knowledge to help themselves to do the same for their friends, families, and communities. I get involved in my community activities as well.

The Internet and “computer” newspapers need not become the villains you make them out to be.

As always, “Knowledge is power!” What we do with that power is key.

Prayer won’t be silenced
Editor:
Regarding the attack on a moment of silence in the schools by the family of Illinois high school freshman Dawn Sherman, they say it is apparent to them that prayer is being forced on students.

It is apparent to me that they are trying to force the extermination of prayer for all. During a moment of silence, one can doze, murmur incantations, and think whatever thoughts one desires. By removing a moment of silence, they will not silence prayer.

When I wake in the morning, I direct my entire day to the creator as one long prayer, as I am sure many others do. God remains, no matter how atheists try to obliterate him; therefore, all mankind remains in my prayers. Atheists, as part of mankind, also remain in my prayers, whether they like it or not.

Rick Perry’s laughable
Editor:
I had to laugh out loud reading Gov. Rick Perry’s statement in the San Antonio Express-News: “It’s tough to get comfortable with sending even more of Texans’ hard-earned dollars to Washington knowing they’ll only be earmarked, redistributed to other states, and locked into programs that won’t do much to relieve crowding on our own roads. This is government at its worst.”

Well, isn’t this exactly what the governor’s office and the Legislature have been doing to the Texas gas tax fund? The governor’s office and TxDOT (Texas Department of Transportation) have admitted over $9 billion was taken from the gas tax fund in the past 15 years for unrelated projects.

Governor, Texans are not comfortable sending their hard-earned dollars to Austin, knowing they will only be earmarked and redistributed to other programs that have no relation to transportation. You are positively correct. This is government at its worst.
