Fire destroys OK Corral restaurant
Little remains of the OK Corral restaurant near the intersection of U.S. 87 and S.H. 97 other than deformed steel and charred debris. The Feb. 19 fire that rendered the restaurant a total loss is still under investigation.
SUTHERLAND SPRINGS -- Officials are working to find the cause of a fire that destroyed the OK Corral restaurant near the intersection of U.S. 87 and S.H. 97 south of here Feb. 19.
Chief Edwin Baker of the Stockdale Volunteer Fire Department said firefighters from his department, along with those from Sutherland Springs and La Vernia, were called to the scene at approximately 3:05 a.m. Upon his arrival, Baker said, the building was already fully engulfed.
“The fire started in the kitchen,” Baker said. “By the time it was reported, the interior of it was only metal and charcoal. In other words, the fire had been burning for a while before anyone saw it.”
The cause of the fire, which left the building a total loss, is still unknown, he said.
The restaurant sat on a property owned by Bobby and Mary Peters, along with a drive-in movie theater and the couple’s house. They were asleep in their home when the fire started, Mary said, as she attempted to hold back her tears.
“The sirens and the fire trucks outside woke us up, and we saw that [the restaurant] was on fire,” she said. “They were already here trying to get it out.”
Also tearful was their daughter, Ashley, a real estate agent currently living in Seguin.
“It’s a bit overwhelming because this restaurant has been here for a while,” Ashley said. “They’ve had the place for at least 12 years. My friends and I grew up inside that restaurant.”
She said the corral outside the building was once home to team-roping events.
“George Strait used to rope here and so did a lot of other people,” Ashley said. “It was a very unique place with a lot of character.”
Because the telephone service was disabled as a result of the fire, patrons and well-wishers have been calling Ashley in an attempt to reach Bobby and Mary.
“I’ve been getting so many calls,” Ashley said.
The Peters family has not yet decided whether they will attempt to rebuild, Mary said.
