(Re: “Pro-Christianity counter-arguments are flawed,” Letters, June 18) -- Mr. Uribe has an absolute right to his opinion. Thank God we live in a free country. Mr. Uribe is free to be wrong. Mr. Uribe, along with the rest of us, is free to choose to go to hell if, in fact, a person believes in hell.

As a Christian who worships God in the Communion of the Roman Catholic Church, I am free to disagree with Mr. Uribe. The word is faith.

In our free country, one is free to choose to have faith in a Living God as Creator of all things, as the Ground of all Being. Along with several million others, that is my choice.

My faith tells me not to judge Mr. Uribe. My faith tells me to love Mr. Uribe, along with all others who love me or hate me. My faith tells me to treat Mr. Uribe like I would like for him to treat me.

My faith tells me my beloved wife of 56 years had a beautiful body that had life and motion because of a living Spirit within her body. When that Spirit left her body on Jan. 14, 2005, her body died. Her Spirit did not! Her Spirit returned to the Source from which it came, to the Ground of all being, God, who is pure Spirit.

The Bible is one story consisting of many stories. When read with the eyes of the ego, the conclusions expressed by Mr. Uribe are found. When read with the eyes of the Spirit, a beautiful love story unfolds. By faith, I believe the message of Salvation is contained in the New Covenant as expressed in the New Testament.

Yes, I believe there is a need for Salvation. Yes, the People of God who make up the Church have made a mess of living out the salvation message of Jesus, thus, the unacceptable divisions; and yet by faith, I believe in a living, creating God, the Source of all energy.

For a person who chooses to follow Jesus, faith is real, love is real, hope is real, peace is real, forgiveness is real, mercy is real, kindness is real, Jesus is real, Spirit is real ... and for those of us who make the choice by faith to believe, God is real.

I have no intention to impose my belief system upon Mr. Uribe or anyone else. It is my intention to invite all of us -- believers, non-believers, and all those in-between -- to be open to the possibility of new thoughts, new information, new life, that can lead to a better, happier, and more peaceful world.

So, Mr. Uribe, I express my right, by faith, to believe differently. It is true that in our human condition, we make flawed arguments. All of us. What a different world we would live in if Spirit made our arguments, rather than our egos.
