Re: Pro-Christianity counter-arguments are flawed,” Letters, June 8
I’ve been following this debate in the past weeks of “God, no God; Christ, no Christ,” and I just can’t sit quietly anymore. I am just an ordinary, middle-aged woman, wife, mother, grandmother, and teacher, and I am a born-again Christian, and have felt God’s hand in my life many times ... correcting me, encouraging me, directing me.
What I strongly see here in this discussion is what I read between the lines. Danny Uribe so blatantly (I could hear his voice screaming across the print) challenged every basic fundamental of Christianity, using unreliable references, I might add.
What I “see with my mind’s eye,” so to say, is a man searching for truth.
What he doesn’t realize is that it is God working within him. I “hear” a man spilling his heart and soul, an iconoclast maybe using a local newspaper?
Danny is no different from the rest of us. If we live long enough, we eventually search for truth and purpose in our lives.
What was so hard for me to understand in my young adulthood is how mankind has made such a mess of things with greed and power. There’s no disputing that; just read church history.
Danny said “that every sect of Christianity” is a breakaway of the Catholic church. That’s what the Catholic church teaches, but that’s what I began to study for myself. As an idealist, all the sanctimony came crashing down for me. It wasn’t until I was 30 that I started questioning what I had been taught.
I came to realize that being a Christian is the fundamental belief that salvation is through Jesus Christ whether you are Catholic or Protestant. And there’s where the work began -- to sort out what is Biblical truth from manmade doctrine.
I made Christ my choice, and then He became Real and God’s presence became very Real for me. Christ said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).
Without God, we have no purpose. Life makes no sense. God places that drive in us to search for Him. We have to listen acutely. I believe it is happening to Danny right now!
