FLORESVILLE -- The Alamo Chapter 1836, Military Order of the Purple Heart, will bring the Texas Fallen Heroes Memorial here on Friday, Aug. 1, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Beer Warehouse at 1302 S. Second St. The display is free and open to the public.

Members of the public can view the exhibit, which honors Texas men and women who have been killed in action in the current War on Terror in Afghanistan and Iraq. U.S. Army Spc. Lauro de Leon of Floresville, John Longoria of Nixon, and Michael P. Barrera of Von Ormy are among those honored in the memorial.

The exhibit will be sponsored by the Blue Star Military Families of Wilson County. The memorial, which currently honors 411 recipients of the Purple Heart medal, is traveling throughout Texas. Ceramic tiles on each of the eight panels commemorate the fallen. The exhibit will eventually be on permanent display in Austin, the state’s capital.

“These young people are all volunteers,” said Bill Bacon, adjutant of the Alamo Chapter 1836, Military Order of the Purple Heart. “They need recognition. These guys are the heroes. They’re young men and women from all branches of service.”

Linda Valdez of the Blue Star Military Families of Wilson County recalled how she felt the first time she saw the Texas Fallen Heroes Memorial.

“It was overwhelming,” she said. “I just sat there for hours. There are at least seven boys on there whom I knew personally.”

Valdez is pleased the Floresville community will host the visit. “It’s wonderful to be able to bring this to Floresville, so others can experience what I felt the day I saw it,” she said. “We don’t want to forget the ones that have fallen.”

From Floresville, the exhibit will travel to many other Texas communities, including Del Rio, Eagle Pass, Kerrville, Seguin, and New Braunfels.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart will also register any Purple Heart Medal recipients for inclusion in the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor in Newburghm, N.Y., during the exhibit in Floresville.

Those wishing to register are invited to visit the traveling memorial, taking a copy of the veteran’s discharge papers, details of the award of the Purple Heart, and a copy of a period photograph of the veteran during his or her service to include in the database.

Alamo Chapter 1836, Military Order of the Purple Heart, is a veterans service organization. It is comprised of combat-wounded veterans from World War II to the current conflicts.
