ELMENDORF -- Investigators from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service are currently investigating two incidents in which postal drop boxes outside the Elmendorf and Adkins post offices were broken into Dec. 16. As a result, several pieces of mail could have been stolen.

Elmendorf Postmaster Cheryl Rutan said she could not comment and referred the Wilson County News to a Postal Service spokesman.

Adkins Postmaster Jesse Garcia said the two boxes might be part of a string of several similar incidents, and that the San Antonio metropolitan area has been dealing with a recent spike in this sort of activity. At his post office, Garcia said, they are working to prevent future incidents.

In Cibolo, a post office employee confirmed that sometime between Dec. 12 and Dec. 15, two drive-up collection boxes were vandalized.

Postal Service spokesman Robert “Sam” Bolen said anyone who believes his or her mail might have been stolen should file a report with the local postmaster. A mail theft report can also be filed online at http://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/forms/mlntrcvd.aspx.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service investigates any incidents involving mail theft. Inspector George Alpizar said those who steal mail are likely attempting to gain financial information from checks and credit-card statements.

Office Manager Sally Guenther at First National Bank in Floresville reiterated that anyone who believes his or her checking or credit-card information was stolen should notify postal authorities and the police. Guenther suggests notifying the check recipient, so that essential services such as power and telephone will not be interrupted because of perceived nonpayment.

It is also important, Guenther said, for account holders to inform their bank, which would likely close the account and begin a new one. She also suggests notifying the three major credit reporting services -- Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax.

“They can be on the lookout for someone trying to get credit in your name,” she said.

Tampering with or stealing mail is a federal offense, Alpizar said. Those who are convicted can face up to five years in prison.

Anyone with information about these or any other incidents involving mail theft should call the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 1-888-876-5322.
