TO EVERYONE!!!!! Look Mike was a great man he worked everyday to support his family!!! Regaurdless of race or anything no one deserves to die that way and leave a 5 month old or a 3 year old or there stepson or wife!!!! he was only 28!!!He had a whole life ahead of him! Now i dont know Ronald or whatever his name is but how do you walk into a family establishment and stabb a man four times why take a knife with you in the first place? If you were banned why even go? If our family were to be a bunch of wet backs & you didnt like us why ever go back? This monster caused a family so much pain!!! Now he claimed self defense? Now if there was a fight which there was never a fight if he had to "defend" himself why not use your fist? Thats what a real man would do! He killed a man infront of his mother and father and children!!!! Now you people who sit here and type these blogs tell me hes a good man!! No matter the size he had two other cowards with him!!! He got his butt handed to him after he stabbed my cousin and tried running like the coward he is!!!! Bar patrons who have a heart my aunt and his own mother tried to stopp him!! How does someone have the time to pull out a knife and open it in a barfight? Wierd huh i know it takes time to pull out a knife!!! So please everyone get the story straight!!!! NO one deserves this pain!!! NO ONE for anyone no matter what race age or color who has lost someone like this i am truely sorry because i now know how much it hurts! For those of you continuing to call mahavier a good man --- maybe you guys deserve a world where a murderer can walk out of jail not even a full day after committing the crime. (regardless of what happens once this goes to trial)

The rest of of, most of us, I would hope --- strive for a better community to live in than that. Yes, I am also a Christian and believe the Lord will make his judgement, but until then, in this country, we have laws that should protect ALL of us, not just the select few who authorities choose to protect. And likewise, the law should be applied fairly regardless of whether he's " a good ole boy family man who will give you the beer stained shirt off his back." He is getting off lightly already and it is a pathetic shame. But beleive me, the law WILL apply to this case, we will just need to work a little harder to make sure that it does.

RIP Mike, and blessings to the Briones family.

Are you saying that if a man calls an entire family 'wetbacks', he leaves, then returns with a knife and kills a man, it is not pre-meditated? and it has nothing to do with race? Nothing?

Even if he had the knife on him the whole time, he STILL came back after being asked to leave. He came back to start trouble.

And for the record I haven't read one bit of news saying it was racially motivated.

Either way, it sounds like an easy case to me. I hope they throw in a hate crime charge in there for good measure. He didnt HAVE to come back.

After reading all of this nonsense back and forth I feel the need to remind EVERYONE who is DIRECTLY INVOLVED that the evidence will tell the truth. People lie, let the investigators do there job. As for the REST OF YOU that feel like you know what is an is not going on, I have but a little of ADVICE. Remember the words Of Jesus in Matthew 7:2: "For with what judgement ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again" This all means that if you are swift and harsh to judge someone else, than GOD will see to it that you receive the same from others. Believe me GOD has been merciful to all of us in our lives, even though we all do not deserve it. So for GOD's sake exercise this mercy to others. This back and forth has to stop, it brings no solace to either family. God will exact judgement and justice. The rest of us need to fear the judgement coming to US.

look.... this basically boils down to one idiot (mahavier) committing a despicable act. i have been to this bar many times and it was always a nice place to socialize and blow off some steam. it was not the den of vice and anarch as some in these posts portray it.

mahavier has a 2002 conviction for DWI. so therefore he has a track record of bad judgement while intoxicated. and he used very bad judgment here while drunk again. he is the one with the problem and he alone is responsible for his actions. the only thing the briones' did was serve the guy for a period of time and, being the nice unassuming people they are, they probably were late in putting their foot down to his bad behavior and bar debt. then when they finally cut him off, he lost it and murdered a poor fella in a stupid fit of rage.

i want the briones family to read this carefully: i too was a victim of violence years ago and no one can understand the hurt, rage, and despair you now feel. time will help this but what you can do now is lobby the DA to do his job and prosecute this guy to the full extent of the law. but in case they don't or in order for mahavier not to drop through some legalality, you need to hire a good attorney and pursue a civil suit as well. this way if mahavier beats the criminal rap, you can get him on the civil side. don't just assume that the DA will do his job. So please pursue this on the civil side as well.

if this guy gets convicted of murder in a court of law i hope he gets years of hard prison time, then he too will remember your loved one every night he falls asleep inside a jail cell. and he won't be in a position to hurt anyone else.

ONE) Susan and Lisa apparently can't read. I just reviewed all my posts and interestingly enough, I discovered I never once blamed ANY ONE PARTY, now did I? It wasn't just the victim's family that knew Mahavier was acting like a moron in that bar/beer joint/place of fornication... and yet NO ONE did anything, EVER... no one called the cops, no one ever complained. NO ONE cared enough to do something!

Had ANYONE once called the cops and had the idiot removed when he was acting a fool, MAYBE this tragic ending could have been avoided. And THAT - my grammar-challenged friends, is what I am saying, NOT that I blame the victim's family. Making bad business decisions doesn't make them responsible for a murder.... but I still believe they could have taken measures long ago, BEFORE the bar tab issue, but the Korner is their livelihood. Let's face it, Mahavier put money in their pockets for a LONG long time.


TWO) I called Mahavier a "pinhead" and a "donkey's rear"; saying (and I quote), "He deserves what he gets coming to him, and I hope he pays dearly for taking a life" .... How exactly does this equal defending him to you two (Lisa and Susan)??? It sure sounds like I am condemning his behavior, not condoning it. And for the record, I think Mahavier is an abusive nimwad and to tell the truth I hope he gets a life sentence and becomes someone's vaseline queen in prison. There is a special place in H-E-double hockey sticks for him and anyone like him. How you could misread my mind is amazing, but whatever! Do you still think I defend him?

THREE) Carrying a knife is a way of life in rural south TX. So whoever now believes that people who carry knives are only doing it so they can have a weapon? PUH-lease!

FOUR) Several of you have posted, and are clearly confused without a clue, believe people are saying the bar owners were the racists. You're really just not getting it. It was the bar owners and the stupid media who have claimed that Mahavier did this because HE is a racist. And all I said was, if Mahavier was such a racist, why did the Briones allow him to get plastered all the time and run a bar tab in their bar? If he was such a racist and hated mexicans and always made racial comments and slurs toward them and whomever else, why didn't the bar owners refuse service to him from day 1? Claiming after the fact that this tragic murder is a racially motivated hate-crime and Mahavier is a racist, is simply asinine. So I agree with 'confused' completely. The media is grabbing this story and spinning it to get ratings... and the Briones family is hooked, getting drug along for the ride like a big mouth bass.

FIVE) How about folks just leave the 'Mahavier family' out of it. If you knew Mahavier, you knew his family, and they are NOT HIM, and have nothing to do with what he did! HIS FAMILY hasn't done anything wrong in this incident at all. They didn't clamp his lips open and shove booze down his throat and make him into an instant brown-eye with a violent streak. He did a darn fine job of that all on his own.

To be as SIMPLE as some of you are and take sides with someone that KILLED someone else based on something so petty as skin color is just mind boggling. Of course you cowards won't admit thats why you defend the murderer - who was the one who 'pulled the race card' as many of you accuse others of doing.

You people are like bacteria in a petrie dish clinging to something that looks most similar to you.
Simple, single-celled organisms. One day all of you fools will be no more. That my friends, is called survival of the fittest. And you, simpletons, are an obsolete species.

Keep in mind that this part of the US used to be Mexico, and only through pillaging, murdering, and brooding, did the U.S. acquire TX. But you don't hear anyone crying about that. Most of us normal people just want to coexist.

So let's all be humble, try to look to the future, and be not fooled by the 'illusion' of race - we are all the same in the end.

i think TBTC should look into the bar and really close them down---why was there not security if so many people where there. why was the owner ofthe bar drunk-- when he is management

why as the police never called--

is there more hidding perphaps they dont want any type of investigations.. i would look deep into the accountabity of the bar becuase if you dont want the police involved there is something hidding.

And to comment briefly on one point I missed when reading the forum before- Budro was a regular, yes, and was served beer on many occasions. Those that have been into the bar know that Kicaster can become one hell of a party and that a lot of fun can be had. He was served alcohol and got drunk along with a lot of other people at he bar. But when the problems started happening, management started taking note. When he came in on Super Bowl Sunday, he had already been previously refused service and was refused when he came into the bar that night. So please do not pretend like Kicaster provided him the "fuel" for the attack that night. His racist comments and tirades began when Kicaster started taking action after he didn't pay. It is regrettable that the police were not called before but there had been issues before with other customers and nothing had ever escalated.

All bars are bound by TABC rules. Every bartender at that bar is certified and trained. Yes, it's a beer joint. Yes, people go to get drunk and have fun. But Kicaster was also a place for food, for games, and for friends. Everything was done as it should- as bartenders, we were trained to keep an eye out for anything. When people had too much, we called friends to drive them home or helped get them home ourselves. Kicaster cares for their customers. Hindsight is always 20/20 and there were things that could have been done differently that may have affected this outcome, but unless you were a regular and knew the intimate workings of the bar, which few did you could not know how well the family ran and owned the bar.

I am shocked and appalled at anyone who would blame the Briones family, particularly Mike. He was a quiet, gentle, and caring man who only stepped in when a situation got out of control. I am a Kicaster Korner regular and ex-employee and have nothing but respect and love for the Briones family. This was not a family that brought in gangs... this was a family who encouraged people from ALL races and situations to visit the bar. They were welcoming to our family and to anyone who was a like-minded soul. They were upstanding citizens, paid their taxes, sent their kids to school, and worked hard. The one and only thing they would not tolerate (and nor did any of us employees) at the bar was racism. So please do not be racist when talking about this family- they believed that love had no colors, and neither should anyone else. There are hispanic gangs in Wilson county... and there are white gangs as well, and others from different races and ethnicities. This has nothing to do with them for they had and will have no business at Kicaster while the Briones' are in charge.

For those of you who are claiming that Budro was not at fault and was beaten... I have heard from many of the bystanders that he was injured only after being overtaken by other bar patrons as he tried to run away from the scene. Richard and Mike Briones would never start a fight, it is just not in their nature, but will stand up and protect their family when threatened. I knew Budro and considered him a friend and good man but a lot can happen to someone under the influence of alcohol. Regardless, he was the one who pulled out a knife and committed murder. I don't know if it was self-defense or not- he was only 5'2" and quite light, but he was fast and he was strong. Any injuries he sustained were due to the fact that he came to the bar to purposely start a fight over his tab. I hope and pray for the Briones family and for Budro's soul. May he repent for his sin and may the family of the victim find peace. RIP Mike, you were a good man, a wonderful father, and a loyal friend. We will always love you.

Recently they were involved with running a car full of kids off C.R 401 this past Dec 2008. The roll over killed 2 of the kids, yet no one does nothing. The officials have yet to even question the children that were in that car even after being told what happened. This county has FAILED.

I have met Ronald tho and cannot say I would have expected this from him ?? Lets just say I live realll close to him, would have never thought ? Never struck me as being racial ? Maybe it was self defense, if this is true, well good for him, I hope he gets off. I would have done the same if a group jumped me or my family, only it wouldnt have been a knife. Whats a man to do ? I passed the bar sunday night after 10pm coming from work, it was packed. One would think with that kind of crowd there should have been an officer on the grounds. Either way two families will suffer a loss of a father. One is dead and the other may do time. They both have families, may the lord sort them out.

How come their is no picture of this murder, especially when there is proof that this man did commit the murder??? When back on Dec. 31, 2008 you plastered a picture of an INNOCENT young man and called him a murder and there is NO EVIDENCE against that young man??? You media people suck!!!! So does this joke of a Sheriff's department!!!! The man that killed in the bar, that is owned by a nice family, he should be behind bars and have a million dollar bond on his head, he should not beable to be out. There is proof right in front of your eyes that he murdered!!!!!! But the young man that still sits in a county jail is INNOCENT and they have NO PROOF on him about another murder case. But ours here in Wilson County decide it is safe to let this man out on bail, and such a small bail at that. Staring our police right in their face is proof he did this!!!! This is all messed up. You media, put his damn picture by the story, you have proof right in your face that he did do it. You had NO PROOF on the young man that you slapped his picture in the paper on Dec. 31 '08!!!! First of all, I find it appalling that they can put a 75,000 dollar price tag on a human being's life! The Wilson county judicial system needs to reevaluate themselves and realize that A MAN WAS MURDERED! The man who committed this crime should be locked away with no possibility of bond! There should be no ifs, ands or buts about it!

Second, people saying that "losers" hang out at beer joints or bars, if you will, have no lives...this is partially true. Some people genuinely just want to relax and blow off steam...but at almost every single bar, it doesn't matter if your in Kicaster, San Antonio, "the north side" or "the south side," there is always one person who is loud, naive and out of touch with reality..THOSE ARE THE LOSERS!!

Third...when people pull "the race card" any situation that its being applied to will be elevated! If the ALLEGATIONS that Mahavier was in fact blurting out racial slurs against the owners just shows that this man was in fact "THE LOSER!" People that go around aimlessly saying BS like that about the president and people of other races just shows how much people are out of touch with the real world! C'mon people, were not in segregation times anymore..sorry to disappoint! In general, a lot of my native people from smaller towns tend to be REALLY naive and uneducated, in regards to, accepting people on behalf of who they are!!!

fourth...Wilson county police should bandage the wound at the source of the bleeding! In other words, they should place a squad car at every bar and "protect and serve" at these locations, instead of sitting around all day at a single place watching for speeders!

There are many good reasons to dislike an individual (liar, thief etc...) , but when someone calls you a racist remark to your face, I think the debate is over. I have been kicked out of establishments because of my race, and have seen others think it is okay. When you tolerate it, you are condoning it. Plain and simple. It does exist here in Wilson County, but I didn't believe at this level until now. I spent 25 years serving my country with people from all walks of life and both male and female, and never had a problem. I have been around the world, and believe that this is the greatest country. I was happy to come home to Texas being away so long. But, I can see that some people still look at people based on their skin, and ethnic background. SAD! I frequented that old bar and had the pleasure to meet Mike and most of the people who hang out there. Small relaxed atmosphere and I never felt threatened. I am not crazy or a drunk and just wanted to watch a game and cheer for my team, as did most of the people there. But one bad apple ruined that all. SAD! My prayers go out to the Briones Family, and I still have faith in the justice system. Let's see what happens!

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Briones family. We are frequent customers to Kicaster and all this has come to be a great shock to us. The Briones family opened a bar and grill atmosphere where you can take your family to eat, play pool, dance and have a great time, drinking beer was a option (but i never did). We would attended pool tournaments which my children participated in without every having to worry about violence. Kicaster was a place where you could take your kids of all ages to play pool and spend quality fun time. It is sad that one irresponsible person and his buddies has to ruin everything. We will never find another family like the Briones and their caring hearts. Our family memories at Kicaster will be cherished.

I have read everyone's comments from last night and yesterday and I don't believe that the bar owners are racist after all the area that the bar is in was prodominately white. Today race issuses arise even if there may have not been any. I met Mahavier once and he didn't leave a lasting impression. I would also like to invite you all to think about how fast La Vernia is growing, some of you are talking about the crimes committed. La Vernia is hving growing pains and it will get worse before it gets better. People from the cities are moving out there and they are all not desirable. In the end justice will be served, after all is said and done there will be a plea of innocence but a jury with half a mind will be able to tell if there is more to the story. I lived in La Vernia growing up and I know most people out in that area went to bed with thier doors unlocked but no more. I really feel for the Briones family and the fact that Michael left behind small children. I have some knowledge of the justice system and from what everyone has said Mahavier didn't commit premeditated murder. I carry a knife with me at all times but not to use for mean things. Everyone posting believes that what they are saying to be the truth and for many of you it may be. You are all strong on one point, the man is guilty and you are all worried that he will get away. We live in a small community and I believe that Mahavier will get what he deserves. Justice on Earth will be served according to the evidence gathered and the statements taken. Even if Mahavier doesn't face any time in prison he will face the man above for his final judgment and justice for all will be served then. There is one more question/statement I would like to throw out there. For those of you have said that there are more and more DUI accidents and the people have been let go with slaps on the wrists, have you ever thought on your way home from the bar you too are committing a crime? Please ponder this before making another statement about drunk driving issuses.

The reality is anybody who hangs out at beer joints regularly has a personal and or social problem the rest of us have a life instead of hanging out in a bar drinking beer. bar owners the drunks they serve, they are all the same calliber after all who would want to hang out with the losers, they are all drama lovers and keep things stirred up by gossiping you know the "he said she said" crap once again it escalated into violence, I say once again because violence is nothing new to beer joints though it typically doesnt result in death, that usually happens when they leave and hit one of us. Decent people dont hang out with drunk losers in beer joints we merely pray that nobody gets killed by them on the road. life is about choices and while there are no guarrantees even if you make good choices its only a matter of when and to what degree if you make bad choices there are better ways to live than being a regular at a beer joint or owning one and trying to profit off of these people and if you dont think so you have a problem and im not talking about alcoholism necessarily. Choose to be around people that you can look up to, people who sit around cussing drinking and complaining will still be in the same or worse predicament in the future so why bother with them drive by them and let them cuss your dust and they will, because deep down they are jealous. Just pray that none of those drunken scum kills you or anyone else on the road

Other county authoraties had to get on this counties case to pick up this individual. It is dangerous to live here anymore because safety seems to be fleeting. It just seems in the last few months crime and bad incidents have risen here. Drugs, murder (wether by vehicle or hands), Threats, and more drugs. This crap is SPREADING because justice isn't done the way it should be. it is too laxed!!!!

With this stuff going on in this country, there will be NO "Change" It WILL get worse. We are living in Biblical Prophecy times... Good has now become evil, and evil things now appear to be good...

Wonder what it will be next week? Person stabs someone while drinking and driving, runs them over, makes some drugs while fleeing, gets caught, then released to do it again?

This WAS NOT SELF DEFENSE. That is a bogus claim. Michael never engaged anyone in a fight. Mahavier attacked Michael's dad and Michael got between them.

He was angry about a Black man running the country and started causing a ruckus and when he was told to settle down by the owners, he started with the racial epithets towards them. He made race an issue, not the bar owners. I am amazed at how offended people get when it is simply mentioned what Mahavier said about Hispanics, surrounded by witnesses other than family. If someone called me a wetback and said he wanted to kill my entire wetback family, it would feel like he hated me because of my ethnicity -- at least in some part. However ignorant and idiotic it would be --- so don't say someone if "pulling the race card." That may have played a part and you are naive to think otherwise. Michael Briones was not thinking about racism when he died. I doubt he viewed Mahavier as anything other than what he is: an ignorant coward. Don't dismiss this as a frivolous racism claim. It may have validly played a part in this crime, as unpleasant as that may be to your fragile ego. In any case, he knowingly used a weapon and killed someone. We all know that in small communities like this its all he said/she said...and sometimes things get twisted out of context. All this fighting on here between everyone isn't going to change the whole situation. Yeah its a rare occurance in this community, but this day in age its going to get more common...it happens in big cities almost daily. God is the only one who can cast judgement on anyone. Those who drink can get pissed off at the drop of a hat...they have no sense of letting it go. This kind of behavior happens at bars when tempers flare, horrible words are spoken because of drunkenness...words that may ferment when they are sober but are not spoken. Alcohol loosens the tongues and overrides good judgement.
Alcohol in moderation causes no problems, but how do you tell a drunken sot that he/she is a problem tactfully. And how does an owner protect himself against an angry man who carries a weapon???

I am astounded at the lack of outrage for this murderer's actions. Like I said, I pray for the safety of his family now, especially since Mahavier and his accomplices are free right now. Let me tell you what I do know personally. Mike Briones was a good man. He did not choose to kill someone. He loved his family, provided for them and struggled to hang on after he was stabbed to stay with them. He valued his life and the lives of others. He did not carry a knife into a bar with anger. Unlike Mahavier. Mike Briones did not start a fight, he intervened and tried to protect his family and keep it from escalating. THAT IS A GOOD MAN. He did not run away after he killed someone. His young wife and three children sure didn't either. Bonds are set according to severity of the crime and with consideration over whether or not the suspect is a flight risk. HE TRIED TO FLEE THE SCENE OF THE CRIME. Maybe since this is a small town some of you think "oh he wouldn't have gotten very far." That is some seriously backwards thinking. In just about any other other place following these things we call "laws" (unless he was very well connected, which it now seems he just might be) he would not have been let go on such a low bond for committing the ultimate crime. Before he killed Mike Briones: He left. went back and had a weapon on him. he had two accomplices. Sounds premeditated to me. Blaming the family for culpability because they previously put up with his stupid insults is deranged. Step outside of your fishbowl and cross the county line for some perspective if you need to and maybe you won't be so "confused."

The investigators will establish the FACTS. Until then all of this is hear say. The people of this world need to remember that a person is innocent until proven gulity. That you all are judging people and a situation that you are not directly involved in. God is the only one that is the judge. Until then it is up to the police to decide what happened and why. This is a terrible situation and I assure both families are feeling the pain and suffering greatly for the tradgey. This is not about race. Had it been a black man that killed a white man, or a hispanic- no one would be crying racism. For that- had the white man been killed by the hispanic at this fight- NO ONE would cry Racism. The Briones family did not want to think anyone in this world much less in their community could possibly do something so horrible. Maybe that is why they has not involded the authoritise. It may be the GOD GIVEN right for anyone to go & have a drink anywhere & to refused service to anyone. But look at what happens when OWNERS refuse in a professionsl manner. Nothing makes up for someone else's ignorance. IT IS NOT A GOD GIVEN RIGHT TO TAKE SOMEONE ELSE'S LIFE FOR ANY REASON. Let me ask a question if I may. What did Mike do to him personally? Anyone in that bar previously or on that night that were in the bar would tell you that he did nothing but try to protect his father and try to stop what eventually happened. You guys keep commenting about the bail, you all live in La Vernia and surrounding areas and you shouldn't be surprised, you have a small community and bail can't be set at unreachable heights. A man was killed yes, but it was not premeditated murder unless he went there to intentionally kill the person. and since none of the people posting opinions here have said anything like that the judge has to abide by the law even though you all think otherwise. I am not defending the wrong doer but remember a judge and jury will convict him of the crime or crimes he has committed. He will be charged with a lesser crime than premeditated murder more like aggrivated murder with a deadly weapon. You are all so angry and are wondering how people get away with things like murder ( the murderer in this instance hasn't gotten away with anything) and drunk driving, it is simple logic that you are trying to strive for here. The jails are full and the police and judges have to look at who they are holding, and have to think about who is at higher risk to offend right out of the gate. If they think that the person is no longer a risk to themselves or the people around them they are let go. Reasonable people can see the logic here and know that the person you are speaking of here did do wrong but the death was not done on purpose and ifit was you should come forth and prove it. If you do, he can be charged with a worse crime and more than likely his bail will be revoked. It doesn't have anything to do with how people value life but the way the justice system works in a small town. I don't think he will recieve a slap on the wrist but he also has to live with the fact that because of his stupidity a person lost a life and a family lost a father, husband and son. Most of you posting on here have thought nothing of the family that also had a person taken away from them. Yes, right now he is out on bond but he will never be the same person, he has already changed and his life is pretty much over. The guilt that he has to be feeling right now can't be easy, and it shouldn't be but a man and his family will have to deal with the consequences of his actions. And like I said before, he will stand before a jury of his peers and they will judge him and if the family and all of you still think that there has not been justice served when he meets his maker he will be judged again.

Who's fault is that...? definitely not the authorities or anyone else... also the man is not walking free---it is a constitutional right that EVERYONE has to make bond. Yes this is a tragic story, but it could of been avoided. Why did the bar owners keep serving him. AND if there were "previously racial slurs" they could of stop serving him drinks and not let him in...you know businesses do have that right to not serve anyone. BUT it all comes down to he was a paying customer and what talks more in this world than money... so it isn't racist. It is called GREED! Now something terrible has happened and the bar owners want to call it racist. Well look at all the facts. The authorities, not only the Sheriff's Office but Texas Rangers and TABC will be involved. All becuase of GREED!!! The family needs to face the truth...

Like I said, considering the bond was so low --a slap on the wrist --- the cops would probably not have done a damn thing if they had been called before. A murderer is walking free and you are appalled at the victim's family? Wake up! But I know for a fact there were fights there, long before superbowl sunday and they included the bar owners and Mahavier. Mahavier got drunk there almost on a daily basis for crying out loud, so how can the family say this came out of nowhere... they knew how he was when he drank. Fine... they may not have been expecting him on superbowl sunday, but they never tossed him out of the bar any other time he acted like a pinhead, so why wouldn't Ron think it was hunkey dorey to go down there and get drunk? And to holler RACISM? Are you kidding me? That's like a prostitute crying rape! The bar owners let Mahavier drink there every day, and run up a bar tab... and now all of a sudden they think this is a racially motivated hate crime? This incident has nothing to do with race, and has all to do with an ongoing feud that finally came to a head on superbowl sunday, simple as that. To believe otherwise, is naive!

In the last few months I have seen several DUI related deaths where the Suspect WALKS FREE. and will probably do it again. I have seen a car full of kids ran off the road killing TWO and the authorities do NOTHING ABOUT IT KNOWING EVEN SUSPECT NAMES, and threats are still going on against the other kids from this "gang in Stockdale". I have seen a hell of alot of wrong doing, and no one seems to be setting it right.

YOu can dispute the circumstances all you want, but he killed someone -- not out of any kind of self defense --- but because he was an angry, dangerous, racist man.

Considering the bond was so low and the accessories to the crime weren't even detained, if the previous incidents with Mahavier (threats, etc) had been reported I now seriously doubt anything would have been done. What can you do to prevent something like this other than refuse to serve someone and ask him to leave? He was clearly on a mission. No one else in this situation was armed.

I frequented Kicaster when Ernie and Fran owned it and again when Bev and David owned it and this bar has never caused problems before, besides the accidents, someone was seriously injured and died as a result of his injuries.My thoughts are with the family of the slain man, but if this could have been prevented then why wasn't it? Who was in the wrong? Was it the police, the judge or the owners? These questions will never be answered by any of us, we only have opinions and that is all they are. The police, the judge and the owners are the only ones who can answer the question, and it for themselves to know the answers not us. We should not be the judge and jury, the bond was set because of the size of the county and if the judge thought he was a flight risk and if he is still a danger to society. Even if the man ran, do any of you think he would have gotten very far? Many of you knew the man and would have said something.

I think there are more issues than what occurred, but whatever the reason it does not justify the taking of a life. I feel for the family and nothing can replace a loved one. Forgiveness can still be given to the man who committed the action, but he must still suffer the consequences of his actions. That is the law.

This is a tragic situation all the way around. A young man has died trying to protect his family and left three young children and a grieving wife behind. The suspect tried to flee the scene and only then did he sustain injuries, as there was some effort from other bar patrons to sustain him while the police were en route. Two others involved in retraining Michael's father during the incident have been let go with no charges when they were clearly accessories to a premeditated homicide. I have never heard of such a low bond being set for a murder suspect, especially considering he tried to escape the scene according to several witnesses. As for the racism charges, the suspect was heard on several occasions using threats and racial epithets toward the owners and members of the owner's family. He even threatened to "kill your whole wetback family" on at least one previous occassion. If the bar owners are guilty of anything, it was not taking the suspect at his word, and not realizing what a danger he truly was. And now he is out out free, without any supervision. I pray the family of the victim is safe and no future incidents occur, but I do not blame them for feeling as if the authorities are not doing everything they can to ensure the family and our community is safe. Because they are not. A murderer and his accessories to the premeditated crime are free right now. It's sick and those responsible for letting them be free should be ashamed of themselves. I wonder if they would be so lenient if the crime had been committed against one of their own. This whole thing stinks of corruption among the authorites in Wilson County.

There were tons of problems at that bar, fighting and all kinds of stuff that went on, LONG BEFORE this incident - but the owners were afraid they would lose their bar so they never reported things to the police, for fear the TABC would get involved and shut it down! how responsible is that? No... instead they kept serving this man even if he had a tab, even if he was 3 sheets to the wind, even knowing he was going to get in his vehicle and DRIVE afterwards, and even if he had a fight with other patrons! It's not ONE PERSON's fault this happened, but it sure could have been avoided if the bar owners would have simply refused service to this man a long time ago, and called the police when he started his stuff in the past. Ya'll knew him, ya'll knew he was a hot-head and got irrational when he was drunk. And ya'll kept serving him booze and thought you could control him without calling the cops. But now a man is dead, and the other one severely injured. Hindsight is 20/20. I bet the bar owners wish they had called the cops a long time ago when this man got going before. I bet they wish they had done a lot of things. Their son might be alive today. I am not saying this Mahavier guy was squeaky clean. He deserves what he gets coming to him, and I hope he pays dearly for taking a life. But he sure didn't twist the bar owner's arm to let him in the door. They had a choice - they could have called the cops and had him removed from the place all those times before when he was being a donkey's rear! Like I said, hindsight is 20/20! I am so sorry for everyone involved. My condolences.

I want to send my prayers out to the Mahavior family. May your peace with this tragedy come from God. This bar has never been a danger to our community.

PLEASE... if there was trouble the bar owners, manager whomever should of contacted law enforcement and if they saw it getting out of hand they (bar employees) should of called 911...this could of been avoided IF the bar owners, managers would of taken the appropriate action and made sure their patrons were safe. Isn't that want bars are suppose to do? TABC will be involved and HOPEFULLY CLOSE THAT BAR DOWN...it is tragic that the bar owners are referring to this as racist and have the audacity to contact the media and yell racism... get over the race card. Tell the real truth with out the alcohol...

I agree with all of you, I heard of the story on the news this morning. I attended the bar before it was sold this last time and sadly never heard of such a horrible thing happening there before. It is hard to hear that La Vernia is becoming as bad as San Antonio. I am so sorry to the family who has lost a very important person in thier lives and remember even though the "justice system" doesn't always take care of it, God will on the other side. we should all remember that when a person commits a crime either intentionally or not they need someone on thier side too. They have a family as well and their family members lost someone too, maybe not permantly but the person is still gone. I am not defending anyone, I lost my stepdad to a repeat offender who had just gotten out of jail. In the process of the accident not only my dad but the man committing the crime died. No matter the horrible act of crime two or more families are hurt and become angry and tempers are inthrawled, if you were there when it happened than you know all the facts but if you weren't maybe you should wait before you judge, besides judgment isn't your job.

Mike was trying to protect his family. This mas was asked to leave multiple times and refused. If you think this was strictly alcohol alone, you are sadly mistaken. But, usually these alcoholic murderers end up walking free for some reason. Just so they can KILL again.

Although this is a sad event that could have been avoided the quick and solid response of the La Vernia Police Department, Wilson County Sheriff's Office and Eagle Creek EMS should be applauded and noted. Their actions prevented further escape and the subsequent arrest of the Mahavier which does not bring back Mr. Briones, but hopefully gives the family some sense of comfort.

A Wilson County man died of stab wounds sustained in a bar fight Sunday night at the Kicaster Korner bar, Sheriff Joe D. Tackitt Jr. said.

Michael James Briones, 28, the son of the bar’s owner, died of stab wounds sustained in a fight at the bar at about 10:20 p.m. on Sunday, Tackitt said. Ronald Mahavier, 41, was arrested, charged with murder and was released on $75,000 bond, the sheriff added.

Tackitt said Mahavier had problems at the bar in northern Wilson County over a tab, returned to settle it, argued with the bar owner and stabbed Briones when the younger man stepped in.

Briones died in the ambulance en route to the Air Life launch pad, he said.

How would you feel if someone was taken from you just because of someone else's ignorance. What kind of world do we live in that a life costs so little to people these days.
