1938-2009

James “Larry” Hamby passed away Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 70.

He was born in Honea Path, S.C., on Aug. 7, 1938, to James Hamby and Sarah Gambrell.

The South Carolina native had been a resident of San Antonio for the past 25 years.

He was a member of the Windcrest United Methodist Church, president of the board of the Kirby Senior Center, an avid softball player, and a bus driver for the physically challenged.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served in the U.S. Air Force and attaining the rank of master sergeant.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Brenda Heart.

He is survived by his wife, Norma Hamby, and loving son, Jonathan Hamby, both of San Antonio; his daughters, Sherry Satterfield of Richmond, Va., and Doni Branch of Houston; son Steven Beatty of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Gloria Bolden of Honea Path, S.C.; his brothers, Wallace Hamby and wife Linda of Surfside Beach, S.C., and Mike Hamby and wife Sissy of Seneca, S.C.; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and a host of friends.

Visitation was held Tuesday, Feb. 24, from 6-9 p.m. in the Franklin Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Windcrest United Methodist Church in Windcrest with the Rev. Lonnie Phillips officiating.

Interment with full military honors will follow in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
