1913-2009

Annie Varnon Manak was born on Oct. 23, 1913, in Wilson County, Texas, to Ira Thomas “Tom” and Alice Johnson Varnon. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Poth.

Annie was married to Adolph Frank “Shorty” Manak in Stockdale July 25, 1936. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Linda Gail and Kenneth Franklin. Annie and Adolph were lifelong residents of Poth. Annie retired with 20 years’ service as a cafeteria employee with the Poth Independent School District. A few of her favorite hobbies included painting, ceramics, quilting, cooking, and playing dominoes and card games. One of her special interests was researching her family roots. Annie was a loving and caring person who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Her great-grandchildren were her pride and joy.

Annie was preceded in death by her parents and husband, as well as five siblings, twin sister Ammie Varnon, Altha Sikes, baby Varnon, Cleoma Jordan, and Calvin Varnon.

She is survived by her children, Linda Gail Miller and husband Robert of Hondo and Kenneth Franklin Manak and wife Betty of Poth; one sister-in-law, Cecilia Young of San Antonio; four grandchildren, Kendra Jean and Randy Burks, Amy Elizabeth and Jason Petett, Patti Lynn Manak, and Chad William Lyssy, all of Poth; three great-grandchildren, Harrison Cade Burks, Nicholas Alexander Wisnosky, and Caitlyn Nicole Petett. She also leaves behind numerous relatives and friends who were dear to her.

Annie was called to be with the Lord Wednesday, March 4, 2009. Her children are left with this belief: God created mothers to take care of His children and He blessed them with one of the very best. Annie will be missed by her family and friends, but we rejoice in the fact that she will no longer suffer and has gone to heaven to be with her Saviour.

Visitation was held Thursday, March 5, at 5 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Poth, with a prayer service held at 7 p.m.

A funeral service was held Friday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home, with Kelly
Tankersley, S.A.M., officiating.

Interment followed in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Poth.

Serving as pallbearers were Charles Jordan, Chad Lyssy, Jason Petett, Randy Burks, Wesley Jennings, Carl Klander, Nicholas Wisnosky, and Cade Burks.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 206, Poth, TX 78147; or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
