Historians visit Kuykendall ranch

Local historians John and Shirley Grammer, Allen and Regina Kosub, Gene Maeckel, and Maurine Liles visited the Kuykendall ranch north of Stockdale on Feb. 21. The ranch, near Union Valley, is in a beautiful setting among rolling hills and has several features of particular interest to the historians, including several hand-dug wells, the ruts of an old road, and the remains of a fallen log cabin.
The Kuykendalls told the group something of the history of the area. They explained that the Spear family and the Sikes family had previously lived in the area. It is not known who built the cabin.
Alton Kuykendall showed the historians several artifacts he found near the old cabin. One item of interest was an old handgun.
Alton took the historians on a tour of the ranch, and some of the surrounding area. The hand-dug wells, which are still in use with windmills and pumps, are now covered.
The remains of the cabin and one of the wells were located on the old road. Some of the red sandstone used for the chimney was still on the ground. The ruts of the road were still etched into the ground surface. The road led toward Stockdale in one direction. In another direction, it passed through Union Valley and led to the San Antonio and Gonzales road.
The historians continue to search for hand-dug wells, old roads, and other landmarks of historical importance in Wilson County.
