It is encouraging to see this group of great Americans here tonight. Thank you for showing your interest in our government. There is little that I can add to what has already been said, but I would ask that you consider three things.

First, when you speak of funding provided through our government, use the term the TAXPAYER as opposed to the government. There is a subtle distinction. We are paying for it, not the government. When a congressinal representative brings money to our area, keep in mind that it is our money to begin with. If you are a government official, I would ask that as you prepare your budgets, remember that every dollar you spend represents some taxpayer's work. Someone had to earn it for you to spend it, so do so wisely.

Secondly, I recognize that you are informed, but not all citizens are. The future of our nation will be in the hands of our youth. It is imperative that they be informed about the constitution. I would encourage you to ask your schools to put more emphasis on the constitution in our schools. One thing that could be done is to sponsor Constitution Clubs in our schools. The UIL could even sponsor contests. Surely it is as important as sports, math, or drama.

And lastly, I would suggest that you give thought to the value of term limits for all elected officials. The current system encourages the “good ole boy system”. Clearly it is easier to be re-elected than to be elected. Incumbents use our money to obtain free advertisement. It can easily be argued that an elected official who is not worried about being re-elected would be more apt to do the right thing. If it is good enough for our President, it should be good enough for all elected officials. In a nation of 300, 000,000 we should have no problem finding qualified candidates.

Thank you.
