You never know what you’ll find when you search through family documents.

Wilson County News Editor Susan Hodges discovered the copies of the military newspaper, Stars & Stripes, (pictured) while looking through family papers recently.

Her father was a pilot during World War II and the papers stirred recollections of family conversations and photos, and raised more than a few questions in her mind.

Since the newspapers are Paris editions, they were distributed for U.S. troops in Europe during World War II. Had her father brought the papers home? If not, who did? Why were they stored with old family papers? Was there a specific article of significance to her family in the issues?

Some of the answers may never be known. Hodges decided to share the newspapers with Wilson County News staff because of their historic significance. Their appearance in the office spurred conversations with many staff members about their own military connections.

We hope to share some excerpts from these newspapers as space permits in future issues.

Perhaps these stir memories for some of our readers, as well. We invite you to post your recollections on our newest blog, “Military Memories,” at wilsoncountynews.com. Readers are also invited to send in copies of photos of military men and women serving our country, or to bring in photos to be scanned and published. Be sure to tell us who is pictured, what branch of the service they were or are in, and something about the activity or place shown. The photos and some excerpts from the blog will be published periodically, as space permits.

As we close Military Appreciation Month, the Wilson County News thanks all our military members and their families, whose sacrifices ensure our freedom. We honor the living, and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the United States.

God bless America!
