1935-2009

Jackie L. Reed, a resident of San Antonio, Texas, passed away Thursday, June 11, 2009, at 11:47 a.m. in the Northeast Baptist Hospital in San Antonio at the age of 74 years and 15 days.

Jackie was born May 27, 1935, in Floresville, the son of Earl and Minnie Sue Phillips Reed. He graduated from Floresville High School and Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos with a bachelor’s degree in social work. Jackie enjoyed his volunteer work with S.A.M.M., C.A.M., and Habitat for Humanity, where his work included building four homes in Mexico.

He retired from the San Antonio Fire Department after 27 years of service. Jackie was also a custom home builder, and a member of the Windcrest United Methodist Church in San Antonio, where he sang in the choir.

Mr. Reed was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Chuck Reed; and nine brothers and sisters.

Jackie is survived by his children, Russell Reed and wife Irma of Helotes and Laurie Johns and husband James of Floresville; grandchildren Jamee Reed, Hollee Reed, Stacee Langlois, Elizabeth Patek and husband Adam, and Jason Johns; great-grandchildren Khyler Reed and Logan Langlois; his brother, Phillip Reed; and his sister, Janie Baird.

A memorial funeral service was held Sunday, June 14, at 2 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville, officiated by Pastor Janet Fluth of the Floresville United Methodist Church.

Memorial donations may be made to the Christian Assisted Ministries, 110 McCullough Ave., San Antonio, TX 78215.
