1919-2009

Daniel John Moczygemba Sr. was a second-generation Polish immigrant. He was born on May 16, 1919, in Cestohowa, Texas. He was the son of first-generation immigrant John Thomas and Frances Susie Ploch Moczygemba. As a young boy, Daniel worked with his father, John T., and their mule trains throughout Wilson and Karnes counties as farmers.

He joined the U.S. Army July 11, 1941, at age 21, and was assigned to the cavalry as a veterinarian. In 1943, he was then assigned to a field artillery unit (GBFs) as a field medic. During World War II, in 1944, on D-Day +45 he went throughout France and Germany until close to the time of the Battle of the Bulge. In August 1945, he returned home as a U.S. Army corporal and received various ribbons and medals for his service. Later, he served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve from 1952-54.

In September 1945, he went to work for Duke Automotive Electric. Then on Nov. 22, 1947, he began his 33-year career with Lone Star Brewing Co. until he retired in May 1980. During his retirement years, he enjoyed spending time with his family, humorous good laughs, and farming.

Daniel was a man who loved God and was loyal to his faith. He was a loving husband, a hard worker, and a father and friend to many. He had many stories of his life to tell and had a wealth of wisdom to share with everyone.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jan and Suzannie; his parents; his brothers, Joseph A. and Prosper Moczygemba; a sister, Christine Justine Shuler; his beloved wife, Viola Port Dewitt Moczygemba; his second wife, Silvia Ann Moczygemba Boysen; a son, Daniel John Moczygemba Jr.; a nephew, Arthur Shuler; and a stepson, Elroy Boysen.

He is survived by his daughters, Norma Lee and Lucian Jendrusch of Victoria and Frances Marie and Lorin Stewart of Nixon; one son, Leo Ronnie and Evangelina Moczygemba of Floresville; brother-in-law Edward Shuler of Kirby; sister-in-law Laura Dewitt; stepson Gerald and Regina Boysen; 11 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Wednesday, July 1, from 5-9 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m. in the Mission Park Funeral Chapels South in San Antonio.

Mass was held Thursday at 9:45 a.m. in the St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church.

Interment followed in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
