Texas aligned itself with the Confederate States of America during the “War Between the States,” perhaps better known now as the American Civil War, fought from 1861-65.
Texans who fought and survived returned home to rebuild their lives. Many old comrades reunited in the years after, often for sad occasions, including mourning the passing of their brothers-in-arms.
The Confederate veterans in this photo, taken in 1911, gathered in Stockdale for the funeral of their old comrade, Medley McGee, who died March 1, 1911. Veterans include (standing, from left) Henry Smith, W.S. Palm, James Sutton, J.J. Grissom, W.R. Park, (seated) R. Bishop, H.B. Edmiston, L.S. McCoy, and J.P. Cornelison.
Local historian Shirley Grammer sent this photo by e-mail, from a scanned copy of the original, owned by Jo Salter. It appeared in a Wilson County history book published in the early 1990s.
