As Wilson County prepares to celebrate its sesquicentennial next year, a glance back at the 100th anniversary celebrations is fitting.

To mark its centennial in 1960, gala celebrations were held in Wilson County, ending with the burial of a time capsule on Sept. 25, 1960.

The capsule was buried at 3 p.m. on the Wilson County Courthouse lawn. A number of Wilson County pioneer citizens and many happy children watched the solemn ceremony that made history that special day.

Former County Judge Merrill L. Connally presided and gave an inspiring speech about the history of Wilson County.

Mementos were placed in the capsule by Floresville Mayor E.F. Woolsey Jr. and Mrs. D. Richard Voges, wife of the county judge. Fire Chief Edgar Ehlers and Lions Club President Carroll Buchhorn assisted in the ceremony.

The time capsule’s contents include

•A 50-star American flag

•A Wilson County official centennial program

•A History of Wilson County souvenir book

•“Wilson County Centennial Notes,” signed by D. Richard Voges, president of the historical association

•A script of the centennial pageant, “Centurama”

•Centennial memorabilia, including a book of tickets for the centennial queen contest, a program poster, bumper sticker, and centennial tie

•Copies of the Floresville Chronicle-Journal Centennial issues, dated Sept. 16, 1960, and Sept. 23, 1960

•Centennial souvenir coins

•A “Belle Button,” a “Centennial Belles Cosmetic Permit,” and a list of Centennial Belles

•A “Brothers of the Brush” button and “Shaver’s Permit”

•A list of “Brothers of the Brush” and a “Peddler’s Permit”

•Letters written by ministers, school superintendents, officials, civic groups, etc.,

•Invitations to luncheons and dinner

•The September 1960 issue of Texas Parade magazine

•A centennial registration book and pictures

•A copy of the 1960 Floresville High School annual.

Some shed tears as the capsule was lowered into the large sewer pipe and was cemented over. The capsule was buried with the intention to leave it interred for the next 50 years.

The time capsule has been waiting for us.

On Sept. 25, 2010, another special ceremony will take place on the courthouse lawn. The Wilson County Sesquicentennial Committee will dig up the Centennial Capsule and remove the mementos. A new capsule will be filled with special mementos and buried on the courthouse lawn, to remain there for another 50 years.

Sesquicentennial Committee members are LaJuana Newnam-Leus, 830-393-2166; Shirley and John Grammer, 830-947-3176; Maurine Liles, 830-393-4959; and Gene Maeckel, 830-484-2536.

The Sesquicentennial Committee is organizing celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of Wilson County. Anyone interested in helping with one of the celebration committees is invited to contact one of these individuals.
