Local historian Shirley Grammer has this original invitation, given to her by Liz Wheeler Lester of Lubbock, who found the invitation in her uncle’s old trunk.
The invitation is for a “grand ball” held in the Wilson County Courthouse in Floresville on Feb. 22, 1884.
The invitation committee included W.W. Polley, E.D. Mayes (once Wilson County judge), and J.H. Warren. Managing the event were H. B. Gouger, A.H. Polley, and M.M. Zaragoza. W.W. and A.H. Polley were members of the prominent Polley family of Sutherland Springs. E.D. Mayes served as Wilson County judge.
“Can’t you just imagine a ‘ball’ going on at the courthouse?” Grammer asked.
Sesquicentennial Committee members are LaJuana Newnam-Leus, 830-393-2166; Shirley and John Grammer, 830-947-3176; Maurine Liles, 830-393-4959; and Gene Maeckel, 830-484-2536.
The Sesquicentennial Committee is organizing celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of Wilson County. Anyone interested in helping with one of the celebration committees is invited to contact one of these individuals. |
