1924-2009

Milton “Cookie” Koch, a resident of Pleasanton, Texas, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Sept. 21, 2009, at 12:49 p.m. in The Heights in Pleasanton at the age of 85 years, 6 months, and 9 days.

Milton was born March 12, 1924, in Moulton, the son of Henry and Hilda Schoenvogel Koch.

Until the age of 18, Milton was raised on a farm. On May 5, 1940, he was confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Witting. Soon after that, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Just one month later, he went into combat in France, Belgium, and Germany. After four months of combat, Milton returned home and became an auto mechanic.

In August 1945, he married Emma Bea Mueller. Together they had a daughter, Barbara Koch Stennett, and a son, Randy Koch. They lived together until their separation in 1986. Two years later in 1988, Milton married Tillie Valchar, and they have been happily living together since. Milton and Tillie were members of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Jourdanton.

Milton was a very hard worker and believed in doing things right and getting them done as quickly as possible. For instance, when he would rebuild an engine for a car or truck, he would fill it up with his own fuel and test-drive it for 100 or 150 miles to ensure that all was working properly and there were no oil leaks. He would only call the owner to pick up the vehicle after he had made sure everything was fixed and working perfectly. He stayed with this work until 1995, when he retired.

Milton served as president of the SPJST Insurance Lodge 161 for six years. He also worked hard with the VFW Post 6970 in Poteet since 1995.

When his health slowed him down in 2004, Cookie didn’t quit working. He loved to get on the lawn mower to cut and trim yards for the neighbors and people who were unable to do it for themselves. He was always ready to go when they needed him.

Milton was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather; his brothers, Herman Koch, Arnold Koch, and Helmath Koch; and his sisters, Leona Suddorth and Evelyn Lehnert.

Cookie is survived by his wife of more than 20 years, Tillie Valchar Koch; his daughter, Barbara Stennett; his son, Randy Koch; his stepchildren, Bennie Valchar, Don Valchar, and Betty House; his five grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, in the Vinyard-Trevino Funeral Home in Jourdanton.

Funeral services began at noon Friday in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Scott Anderson of St. John’s Lutheran Church officiated.

Interment followed in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Jourdanton. Serving as pallbearers were David McDonald, Steve Brite, Emil Kloesel, Larry Lehnert, Archie Kopecki, and Alton Hierholzer.
