She has a megawatt smile and an infectious laugh, which are sure to captivate area residents as she waves from the Wilson County News float in the Floresville Peanut Festival Parade on Saturday, Oct. 10.

Fela Olivo, a Poth resident for the past 20 years, was named the Wilson County News’ Most Loyal Reader in September. As the winner, she received a prize package that included riding on the newspaper’s float, and Fela is looking forward to her parade appearance with relish.

“I can’t wait!” she exclaimed, adding with a throaty laugh, “I’ll probably holler myself hoarse!”

Her husband, Pablo, probably won’t be there shouting, she said, since he’s rather reserved.

But he’s very proud of her, she said, “Even though I’m loud!”

Her enthusiasm for life came through in her entry for the competition, held in conjunction with the newspaper’s 25th anniversary celebrations.

“Why am I a loyal reader?” her entry asked. “Well, let me tell you. If I need to sell something, I advertise in the WCN and it automatically goes on the Web … If I want a free pet, I just go to the classifieds. … Do I want to reminisce about the past? I just read the ‘Salsa’ editorials, ‘Pages from the Past,’ … etc. Then, there’s the kid corner, that the kid in me enjoys. …”

Fela approaches life with gusto, trying new recipes she finds in the newspaper, new plants in her garden, and more.

She and Pablo have five grown children between them, and “lots of grandchildren!”

She lived and worked in San Antonio before marrying Pablo, who hailed from Poth.

“I had never heard of Poth before!” she said.

Now, she enjoys small-town life.

“I like the fact that this a secure place,” Fela said. “Neighbors look out for each other.”

A full-time homemaker, Fela also enjoys time with friends and family, and volunteers with the Food Pantry Poth Area, as well as the Poth Independent School District through the “America Reads” program sponsored by the RSVP -- an organization utilizing the skills of retired and senior citizens.

Fela, an avid gardener, always has a garden full of flowers. But visitors won’t find any yellow blooms there.

“I like yellow, just not yellow flowers,” she said. “My favorite flowers are purple and pink!”

Fela often shares plants from her garden with friends.

She also shares recipes with friends, often translating new finds into Spanish for those who don’t function as well in English.

“I like to bake,” she said. “Carrot cake, zucchini bread, pumpkin bread.”

Fela experiments often while cooking, adding cream cheese to cakes for richness or substituting applesauce for oil to reduce fat, she said.

She searches the classified ads in the Wilson County News each week for yard sales, another pastime.

“I enjoy going to them,” she said. “I never look for anything particular, just see what there is.”

Approaching life with a “whatever there is” attitude seems to be a hallmark of Fela’s philosophy.

“Really live life every day,” she said. “Give as much as you can of yourself, because when you give, you’re happy! We’d be a happier world if everyone was that way.”
