There was the shocking news when I got up this morning that Obama had won the Nobel Peace Prize. I say shocking, because here are the qualifications for the nominations process from http://nobelprize.org :
“September – Invitation letters are sent out. [That would have been in 2008] The Nobel Committee sends out invitation letters to individuals qualified to nominate – members of national assemblies, governments, and international courts of law; university chancellors, professors of social science, history, philosophy, law and theology; leaders of peace research institutes and institutes of foreign affairs; previous Nobel Peace Prize Laureates; board members of organizations that have received the Nobel Peace Prize; present and past members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee; and former advisers of the Norwegian Nobel Institute.
“February – Deadline for submission. The Committee bases its assessment on nominations that must be postmarked no later than 1 February each year. Nominations postmarked and received after this date are included in the following year's discussions. In recent years, the Committee has received close to 200 different nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. …”
The news about the Nobel Peace Prize came through on the radio, and almost simultaneously with a WALL STREET JOURNAL breaking news alert by e-mail: “U.S. President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize ‘for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,’ the Nobel committee said.”
Given the guidelines for Nobel Peace Prize, and considering that the deadline for this nomination was Feb. 1, 2009, only a few DAYS into the Obama presidency, the prize in this case was undoubtedly given to express HOPE -- and to put further political pressure on President Barack Obama to make decisions accordingly, i.e., so that his decisions would not be based on what is good for this country and for Americans, but what is good for those who are pulling his chains.
The Feb. 1 deadline for the nomination made it impossible to base the award on Obama’s performance in office. Now that several MONTHS have passed, however, would his performance merit the nomination? Let’s see. He was too busy lobbying for “emergency” health insurance reform that will not take effect until 2013, and lobbying to get the Olympics to come to Chicago, that he never got around to meeting with his general in charge of Afghanistan.
Consider this. Just prior to receiving this breaking news about the Nobel Peace Prize, another item came through with an e-mail from the WALL STREET JOURNAL:
“At least 40 people were killed and dozens injured when a minibus packed with explosives detonated along a road near a well-known market in Pakistan's northwestern city of Peshawar on Friday. The attack in the Khyber Bazaar area demonstrated militants' continuing ability to strike Pakistan's major cities, despite military offensives pressuring their networks.”
This tragic news came in a 3:09 a.m. just ahead of the news about the peace prize, which came in at 4:15 a.m.
A bit of bitter irony, perhaps? One thing is for sure. The man lives a charmed life. |
