Astronaut Mark Polansky, commander of the space shuttle Endeavour, will speak to East Central students on Friday, Oct. 23.

Polansky will speak to upper-level math and science students in the East Central High School Game Gym in San Antonio from 1:25-2:20 p.m. and 2:25-3:15 p.m.

He will also appear at the East Central Hornet Football Stadium at 7 p.m., prior to the football game, to return the East Central banner that he carried with him on the July 2009 trip to the International Space Station. Polansky and his family will be introduced. His wife, Lisa Ristow Polansky, is a 1989 graduate of East Central High School.

Polansky will present the banner to the school board, school administration, and to a student, Colin Gregg. Colin is a senior drum major and a member of the East Central High School Rocket Team that went to nationals. Polansky will also congratulate other student representatives of the Rocket Teams that went to the national competition this spring.

Polansky’s space flight was a 16-day, 6l5-million-mile journey. When Endeavour docked with the International Space Station, it set records for the most humans in space at the same time in the same vehicle, and the first time 13 people were at the station at the same time. The seven-member crew delivered and installed the final two components of the Japanese Experiment Module onto the space station and performed five space walks.
