1924-2009

Mrs. Ramona Adamez Villegas, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, was called home by the Lord Jesus Christ on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, at the age of 85.

Ramona was born on June 4, 1924, on a ranch in Martinez, Texas, and married Fidel Villegas Sr. of New Braunfels in 1943. Ramona and Fidel were married for 39 years until Fidel’s death in 1982.

Ramona was a true example of hard work, dedication, and faith. In 1981, she was diagnosed with cancer, and recovered fully through faith in Christ and her strong will to live. Ramona lived an abundantly blessed life because of the many friends and family members who loved her dearly. Ramona and Fidel reared their family in Kirby, and Ramona worked tirelessly to provide for their big family.

For many years, Ramona made and sold homemade tamales. She became popular for her tamales, and during the holiday season, hunters from the area commonly found their way to Ramona for orders of venison tamales to accompany her more traditional varieties. Throughout the 1970s, Ramona worked at various restaurants, when she was sought out to cook at the Golden Stallion Dance Hall in Kirby. She was proud to have been complimented personally for her country- and Mexican-style cooking by the country-western performers throughout the years.

Ramona joined her youngest son and daughter in Floresville, where she lived the last 10 years of her life.

Ramona was preceded in death by her husband; her daughters, Elvira Campa and Bella Rosa Villarreal; a sister, Luz Carriaga; and her brothers, Lupe Adamez and Jose Adamez Sr.

Ramona is survived by her daughters, Amada Calvillo, Magdalena Gutierrez, and Velia Aguillon and husband Luis; her sons, Fernando Villegas, Armando Villegas and wife Eva, and Fidel A. Villegas and wife Margaret; a sister, Aurora Ramirez of Universal City; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 28, in the Mission Park Funeral Chapels South in San Antonio from 1-5 p.m. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. in El Carmen Catholic Church in San Antonio.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday at 10 a.m. in the church.

Interment will follow in Our Lady Guadalupe Cemetery in Converse.
