FLORESVILLE -- It was good news for Bea Ploch Oct 23. Her son, U.S. Army National Guard Maj. John Ploch of La Vernia had arrived safely at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) in San Antonio.

“He arrived Wednesday evening,” Bea told the Wilson County News. “He was checked out really well there, and stayed until Friday.”

Maj. Ploch was injured in an IED attack Oct. 16 in Wardak province, Afghanistan, while deployed with the 143rd Infantry Detachment, based at Camp Mabry near Austin (see “IED attack kills National Guard soldiers,” Oct. 21 Wilson County News). Two of Ploch’s fellow soldiers, Staff Sgt. Chris Neil Staats of Fredericksburg and Spc. Anthony Gabriel Green of Yorktown, were killed in the attack. Another soldier, Sgt. Todd L. Plybon, was injured. Plybon was also transported to BAMC, Bea said.

“I can share that the two wounded soldiers are being treated and will recover,” confirmed Chief Master Sgt. Gonda Moncada with the National Guard.

“John is doing well,” his mother said.

Ploch attended church services Oct. 25 near his home. His mother confirmed he attended funeral services for Green in Yorktown and was due to report back to BAMC Oct. 26 for treatment for injuries to his knee sustained in the Oct. 16 attack. Ploch plans to attend services for Staats on Friday, Oct. 30, Bea said.

The married father of four is a Floresville native. He is a former Floresville Peanut Festival king, part of the 1983 “Court of Majestic Melodies.” He and his wife, Carrie, are the parents of Colton, Cameron, Courtney, and Clare, who attend school in the La Vernia Independent School District.
