SAN ANTONIO -- The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center invites donations of platelets to help victims of the Nov. 5 shootings at Fort Hood near Killeen.

The Texas Rangers and FBI are assisting the U.S. Army to investigate the shootings by a lone gunman that left 13 dead and 30 wounded in the tragedy Thursday afternoon.

Early reports indicated the gunman, U.S. Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, was dead. Fort Hood base commander Lt. Gen. Robert Cone confirmed Thursday evening that Hasan is in custody and was receiving medical treatment after being shot by a first responder, who was also injured in the event.

The wounded have been transported to hospitals in the surrounding areas, including Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple, according to reports. Residents of Fort Hood, Killeen, and the local communities turned out in droves to donate blood Thursday night.

Plenty of blood is now available. However, platelets, which have a shorter shelf life, are needed desperately. Donors must be at least 17 years old, in good general health, and weigh at least 110 pounds.

Donations can be made at five San Antonio South Texas Blood & Tissue Center locations, including Southeast, Northeast, and New Braunfels. The process for donation is slightly different from regular blood donations, and appointments are required. To make an appointment, call 210-731-5590. For locations, visit http://www.southtexasblood.org .
