**Donate blood and platelets. The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center invites donations of platelets to assist the victims. Blood donations are always welcome, too. Platelets, which have a shorter shelf life than blood, are needed. Donors for both must be at least 17 years old, in good general health, and weigh at least 110 pounds.

Donations can be made at area South Texas Blood & Tissue Center locations, including San Antonio’s Southeast, Northeast, and New Braunfels centers. The process for donating platelets is slightly different from regular blood donations, and appointments are required. To make an appointment, call 210-731-5590. For locations, visit http://www.southtexasblood.org .

**Send greeting cards with the Wilson County News. In an effort to lift the spirits of those injured or otherwise affected by the shootings, the Wilson County News is collecting greeting cards until Monday, Nov. 16, at 5 p.m. The cards will be collectively mailed to Fort Hood, for distribution among the victims.

Anyone interested in participating can bring their signed cards -- without postage -- to the Wilson County News offices at 1012 C St. in Floresville, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

**Donate funds through H-E-B. The Texas-based grocery chain has established a “tear-pad campaign.” Customers can make donations of $1, $3, or $5 when making purchases at H-E-B locations. Funds will be sent to the Association of the United States Army Central Texas-Fort Hood Chapter. The organization will memorialize the tragedy, and provide care for the affected soldiers and their families. One hundred percent of the funds received will go to meet these needs.

**Join Give an Hour, a partner with the American Red Cross. Give an Hour, a national nonprofit, organizes volunteers to respond to acute and chronic conditions. Mental health professionals are encouraged to join to help veterans cope with deployment, combat, and reintegration. For more information, visit http://www.giveanhour.org .

**Family hotline. Family members of soldiers stationed at Fort Hood, who are seeking answers relating to the tragedy, can call the Army base’s family hotline toll-free at 1-866-836-2751.
