Ellen Pavliska of Floresville, an accomplished 17-year-old pianist, will perform a solo recital on Saturday, Nov. 21, in the San Antonio Tuesday Musical Club, located at 7355 N. St. Mary’s St. in San Antonio. It will begin at 4 p.m. and is open to the public.
Ellen recently had the opportunity to participate in the San Antonio International Piano Competition, held Oct. 11-17. Talented pianists from around the world traveled to San Antonio to compete for the gold-medal award of $15,000.
The competition was not open to pre-collegiate students; however, several young pianists from the San Antonio area, including Ellen, were invited to participate by serving on the Junior Jury and/or performing in Master Classes given by the competition’s judges.
Ellen performed movements from Alberto Ginestera’s Sonata No. 1 in two separate Master Classes. The first, held in the Steinway Gallery in San Antonio, was with Santiago Rodriguez. Ellen, who has spent hours listening to Rodriguez’s recording of Ginestera, was thrilled with the opportunity to receive personal instruction from him. Just a few hours later, she performed in Trinity University’s Ruth Taylor Recital Hall and received energetic and entertaining instruction from another piano icon, Gustavo Romero.
As a Junior Juror, Ellen attended the weeklong competition to analyze and critique performances of the semifinalists and finalists. She then collaborated with other Junior Jurors to announce Ryo Yanagitani of Canada as the winner of the $250 Junior Juror Award. Yanagitani was also the overall winner of the competition.
The week ended with a winners’ recital in the Travis Park United Methodist Church, followed by a reception at the Gunter Hotel.
Ellen will also have the opportunity to study with another famous concert pianist, Ewa Kupiec of Poland, in a Master Class that will be held when she visits San Antonio prior to her recital.
Ellen, the daughter of Jeff and Carol Pavliska, made her concert debut as a soloist with the San Antonio Symphony earlier this year. She has won numerous local, state, and national competitions.
Ellen is a student of Kenneth Thompson and studies at the Musical Arts Center of San Antonio. |
