While it takes years for many rodeo participants to earn their first saddles, a Poth Elementary School student fulfilled his dream this past summer. Trace Harris, 7, won the All-Around Cowboy saddle for his participation in the peewee division in the Jackson County Youth Association rodeo series in Edna. The series involves competitions held monthly from April until August.

“It felt so cool to have my name called out,” Trace said, when he learned he had won the saddle.

One can say the young cowboy grew up in a saddle; he has accompanied his father on horseback since before he could walk. By the age of 2, he was riding in lead-line events, with one of his parents leading him through the patterns. By the age of 3, he was riding solo.

Trace participates in the Lone Star Youth Rodeo Association, Gonzales Playday Association, San Patricio County Rodeo Association, and other open youth rodeos in South and Central Texas. This dedicated young cowboy has won belt buckles, tack, and cash prizes while competing in rodeos in Hallettsville, Gonzales, Seguin, Edna, Beeville, Sinton, Caldwell, and Giddings.

While goat-tying and straight barrels are Trace’s favorite rodeo events, he also competes in cloverleaf barrels and poles. He plans to add calf-roping to the events he enjoys.

“I just love it when I earn my fastest time,” he said.

For his recent win, Trace rode Nemo and Charger, just two of the five horses he has used while developing his horsemanship skills.
Siblings

Trace is not the only Harris offspring to participate in rodeo competition. His sister, Hadley, 5, has been competing since she was 2. Their youngest sister, Conley, 2, has also joined them. The siblings are the children of Richie and Leatte Harris of Poth.

All three children are involved with feeding and treating their horses and other everyday duties. They can be seen riding and practicing in an arena behind their home.

When not competing in the arena, Trace and his rodeo friends can be found riding bikes, swimming together, and playing in the mud and water with their bikes, he said.

Trace also plays baseball and basketball, and enjoys hunting and fishing. He is a fan of the Texas A&M Aggies, the Dallas Cowboys, the Houston Texans, and the San Antonio Spurs.

When Trace competes on the rodeo circuit, the children love to spend the night in the family’s horse trailer, Trace said.

Traveling with him to support his efforts are his parents and siblings. They are joined by his grandparents, teacher, cousins, aunt, uncle, and a lot of friends, who come to watch Trace in competition.

Watch for Trace as he pursues his dream of becoming a steer wrestler and a team roper, just like his father.
