The La Vernia Historical Association held its fifth annual Chihuahua Trail Art Show Nov. 7-8 in the Hermann Sons Lodge.

Fourteen trained artists offered 84 paintings for sale. The show raises funds for the association as it supports local artists. Each artist was asked to include at least one work in the show theme, “Memories of Historic La Vernia,” and was permitted to submit up to six additional works of their choice.

The show was judged by a panel of five, Allen Kosub, Jenean Mills, Kimberley Owens, Cheryl Ducharme, and Keith Johanson. The event was chaired by Martha Lenz and Leona Scull. Assisting them were Susan Richter, Walter and Nancy Scull, Janie Cartwright, Winona Alder, Richard and Bonnie Drum, Lilli Pursley, and Elaine Stephens.

The winners of the show were announced at a wine and cheese reception Saturday evening, where live music was provided by fiddler Gary Pursley and guitarist JoDee Doyle. A silent auction was also held, which attracted many donations to the association.

The Best of Theme winner was Kathy Lehmann for “Mueller Bridge.” The Best of Show winner was Monica Flores for “Chaparral.” Additional awards were presented in each category for first, second, and third place. In the Theme category, winners were first place, “Grandma Lenz” by Jeanne B. Allen; second, “Koepp Garage” by Norma Jaksik; and third, “Brahan Masonic Lodge” by Irene Frazier. In the Show category, winners were first place, “Peaceful” by Irene Frazier; second, “Gotta Have a Fiddle” by Jeanne Palmer; and third, “Cockadoodle Doo” by Cecilia Shadrock.

Honorable-Mention awards were presented to Jeanne B. Allen for “Immanuel Lutheran Church,” Winona Alder for “George Suttles,” Jeanne Palmer for “Moore House,” Martha Lenz for “Trapper,” Prudence J. Kinsel for “Birch Trees,” Terri Stoltz for “Early Settler of La Vernia,” Irene Frazier for “Happier Times,” Kathy Lehmann for “Rooster with an Attitude,” Monica Flores for “Standing Alone,” and Winona Alder for “Four Man Fire Engine.”

Winners received such prizes as trophies and ribbons, memberships to the San Antonio Museum of Art, free admission to the Witte Museum and the Institute of Texan Cultures, art supplies from Herwecks Art Supplies, Asels Art Supplies, and the Southwest Art and Craft Center, and more.

This year, the association had 10 new display panels made by Richard Drum. The art was enjoyed and many pieces were purchased by the show patrons. This growing annual event is hoping to expand next year. For information about the show or the La Vernia Historical Association, visit http://www.LaVerniaHistory.com.
