I remember when teachers where allowed to have almost autonymous control of their classrooms which included paddling if necessary. And, the teachers that exercised that control usually turned out the best students and are the teachers remembered years later.

I miss the good old days when kids didn't have any more rights than their parents gave them. I remember when kids were taught to yes sir and yes maam. I remember when kids had to stay home during the school week and do homework. I remember when kids didn't have their own transportation but had to ask Dad to borrow the car on Saturday night. I remember the time when parents knew all day every day where you were, what you were doing, and with whom you were doing it. I remember the days when boys were expected to have neatly trimmed hair and girls had to wear dresses no shorter than about 1 inch below the knees. I remember the time when the most harsh word heard on tv was gosh or darn. I remember the time when pregnant teenagers was something to hide and be ashamed of and not somehing 'cool'. I remember the time when the epitome of being a bad boy was sneaking out a beer and maybe smoking a cigarette. I remember the time when parents were helpful and had teachers backs. I remember the time when backtalking to a teacher got you about three licks with a well worn board at school and grounded for a month at home and probably a second whipping. I remember a time when this was a civilized country where kids were taught to be adults and adults used common sense to conduct their personal and family lives. I remember the time when people like Paris Hilton and Cindy Lohan would have been called names and kept off the public airways. I remember a time when a President wasn't on the TV more often than the 6 o'clock weatherman. I remeber a time when the First Lady didn't say her country was a mean country.

Those days are gone and I think forever. That's too bad cause this society was a much better place in which to grow up then than today.

I remember going out in April and picking dewberries from the side of the road. Mama made the best fresh dewberry cobbler in the world. And, with fresh cream or ice cream on top it was the best.

Also, we use to pick muscatine grapes. Mama would cook it down to a concentrate and later in the year make grape jelly or mix about half and half with water and a little sugar made a delicious drank. I guess wine could have been good but we were a good Southern BApist family and Muscatine grape wine would surly have been a weapon of the devil.

It was a time when most Mothers did not have a “career” and didn’t want one. They were happy raising their children and keeping their husbands home at night. They wore bras. They didn’t burn them, and nobody burned the flag, except the ignorant masses in the Arab streets. But then, the ignorant masses in those countries burned everything, hated everything and nobody paid much attention, until the moguls of mass media figured out they could sell more soap by putting it on the airwaves 24 hours a day. One had to meet stringent credit rules and banks rarely failed. Private enterprise was allowed to succeed or fail, no matter how big or small and many did, but many more did not. The only entity deemed too big to fail was the government and it measured it's budget in billions, not trillions. Prosperity and success was something to strive for, not the object of scorn and hatred by the bitter failures, the champions of mediocrity. A white collar crime was getting caught with lipstick on it. Losers did not receive trophies, and scholarships were awarded for outstanding scholastic merit, not outstanding skin pigmentation.

Besides, it would take all the fun out of channel surfing and what would I do with all that extra time? Read a book???!!! Sheesh. At my age, any non-fiction book out there would just be repeating the history I already lived through or read about. Fiction novels would be too much like watching CNN. Science fiction? Hell, we're living one now! And it's a science fiction tragedy at that.

After all, what could possibly be more interesting than watching the real-time, non-fiction account of, "The Fall of the United States of America"?

One of the first tv personalities I remember was Milton Berle. As I recall, it was live which you don't see much of these days. And, there was Then there was Jack Bennie, George Burns, Hopalong Cassidy. That kind of entertainment would never work today...they were too clean and had no sex and violence and dirty language. America was naive at that time.

I remember when TV commercials lasted just long enough to run to the kitchen to grab a quick snack and run back, not drive to the local book store and read War and Peace and the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. We had 3 TV channels, rabbit ears, and no remote and it didn’t cost a dime to watch it. Now, it costs nearly $75 a month, we have 250 channels, a remote with just as many buttons, and only about 3 channels worth watching…between commercials, which last as long as the program itself. Back then, the news lasted 30 minutes once a day and you knew everything you needed to know about what was important. If you wanted tabloid news, you had to buy a celebrity rag at the grocery store. The so-called hard news wasn’t so infused with tabloid news that you couldn’t tell the difference and it wasn’t blasted out on 15 channels, 24 hours a day. The weather channel didn’t exist, of course. If you wanted to know the weather forecast, you had to watch the 6:00 news or listen for it on the radio or read the paper. It was short, dry, matter-of fact and certainly not the way it is now, over dramatized like a Broadway production of West Side Story, with more animation and glitzy graphics than Star Wars.

Close friends of my parents with their kids would come over on Saturday night. Then someone would go to the local store to pick up a chunk of ice, cream, milk, sugar, course salt, bananas, strawberries, pineapple. With everyone gathered and all ingredients in hand, Mama would mix the makins for 'homemade ice cream'. We lived in my grandfathers old house that had a big covered front porch. And, that is where we all gathered and took turns rotating the crank on that old ice cream maker until it wouldn't turn anymore and the ice cream was firm. And, I would eat and eat and eat delicious homemade ice cream until I almost got sick while listeing to the old folks laughing and talking and reminiscing about 'old times'. But, I have never tasted any ice cream since that tasted as good. Almost all the old folks and kids are gone now but those Saturday night ice cream gatherings linger on.

I have a daughter in the elementary school (La Vernia) and she was assigned a research project pretaining to our family heritage. We spent about 3 weeks delving into our family history and putting together her presentation and story board and how her (our) family was such an integral part of US History...

The delight on her face when we were working together and when she gave her classmates the presentation was, in a word - priceless!!! We both had a blast...!

Sometimes when I tell my kids and grandkids about things told to me by my parents and grandparents.....they are shocked. One of my grandmothers came from Arkansas to Texas in a covered wagon. The other grandmother was a teenager during the flapper years. She taught me the dances and I have showed them to my kids. She also told me stories of how they survived the great depression. One grandfather was a prospector and traveled much of his youth on horse back. I have a picture of him with his first six shooter that he bought at 16 yrs. He also thought space ships and man going to the moon was a hoax! LOL
Both sets of great grandparents took english names when they decided to not live on reservations.
So much history and my kids just love it. Now I tell my kids to remember the times they are living in along with the stories I tell them. Future generations may forget what was and is America. It is up to us to keep the true history alive.

Some of us would have to share the water, as it had to be dumped outside and filled again for the next "batch" of kids. Hot water from a tea kettle heated the water, as we had no water heater and no indoor toilet. We were one big happy (and clean) family! We had the love and reassurance of each other. We were rich ...

My first memory was the living room in a rental house we moved to over in the Sand Hills northwest of Sutherland Springs. I was about five. I remember that it had a
"huge" red brick fireplace and the ceiling seemed to go up and up and up.

Many years later after we left that house for others, I had an opportunity to go back and I wanted to see that Huge room with the giant fireplace that I remembered. I stood in that room with amazement...the room was just barely normal sized and the fireplace just an ordinary old farm house fireplace.

I guess the moral is, at different stages in ones life, the same place or facts seem so much different.
