The day we moved into the Projects, Judy was running the entire length of the apartment building as fast as her little five year old legs would carry her. Mom hadn’t paid much attention to Judy’s running, until she noticed the look of urgency growing on little Judy’s face. Judy was passing mom for the third time when mom grabbed Judy by the arm.
“Judy, why are you running?”
Tears running down little Judy’s face as she cried,
“I can’t find the outhouse mommy! I have to go!”
In search of the allusive outhouse, Judy was escorted inside where she became the first in our family to use an indoor flushing commode. I have to honestly say that I don’t know if I actually witnessed the event or if the event had been implanted in my memories by picturing it happening as the story was told and retold so many times over the years. The first childhood memory that I definitely recall was of the bunk bed. |
