Dad and my older brother had spent the last two hours assembling a bunk bed. Judy and I had been rolling marbles cross the living room floor when Dad shouted out:
“You can come and see now.”

Judy ran to the bedroom with me on her heels. Mom careful in her steps not to step on me was bringing up the rear.

As I entered the bedroom, dad clasped his hands around my waist and in one swift movement lifted me in a circling motion into the air sitting me suddenly on very top bunk. By far, viewing the world below was the greatest thing my eyes had yet seen.

With pride in his accomplishment my father stood, hands on his hips and a smile on his face. I was surveying my whereabouts from a height I’d never known. My eyes were widened in wonder and delight but mom mistook my expression for fright and spoke out. “Get him down Charles, he’s scared.”

Standing on the bottom bunks rail, dad reached for me. I cried, backing cross the mattress as fast and as far as I could go. I was pressing my back against the wall screaming in frustration, real tears being shed, it made no matter. Dad reached me and lifted me down.

I had obtained the ability to walk at a young age but still had not mastered the ability of speech and was unable to explain that I didn’t want to get down from this high place.
