Once again we interrupt our treatise on the Drug War for breaking news. In this case the attempt on the Delta airliner over Detroit.

This is the very reason The (induced) Ignorance of Power was written. All the 9/11 hijackers entered this country legally, with visas issued by the State Dept., yet the response was to buy helicopters, speedboats, and lots of guns?

Out intelligence community totally failed us, but rather than be embarrassed and apologize . . . obtained “authorization” to essentially violate the Constitution. Other agencies, even remotely related to security used 9/11 as a bonanza. What we needed was cooperation among our intelligence agencies, but what we got were a lot of expensive toys and guns.

As we discuss in The (induced) Ignorance of Power, every agent is sworn to uphold the Constitution, but as soon as the swearing-in process is over, begins to see the Constitution as an impediment to doing their “job”. Every agent is sworn to protect the American people, but that is not the priority of the agency. Expanding the budget, jurisdiction and power of the agency is first priority. Rather than protect and revere the American people, a sense of elitism takes over the agents as they feel superior to those who actually pay their salaries.

In the real world, if a business fails to perform the service they are hired to do, they go out of business. With the government, they receive more power and budget.

In 9/11 three of the highjackers were known to the CIA to be al Qaeda members, yet that information was never passed to the State Department, so they were issued visas. The Pakistani police found the 9/11 plot in the computer of Ramzi Yousef, the first World Trade Center Bomber. The same plot was found in the computer of a protege of Yousef’s by the Filipino police. Both agencies alerted the FBI, but the information went nowhere. Neither did the information on Zacarias Mousaoui (the “pilot” who wasn’t interested in landing) go anywhere.

In this case, the press has focused on Mr. Abdulmutallab’s father telling the CIA his son had gone to Yemen with the intent of attacking the US. A report was sent to Langly, VA, but sat on someone’s desk until the attack occurred. Certainly that was important, but even more important Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab applied for a student visa to go to the UK, but was turned down because the course he was to take didn’t exist (does this seem familiar?). Our State Dept. should have been in contact with the British State Dept., but wasn’t. As a result, he had and kept his US visa!

Bottom line. There are tens of millions who would love to be US government agents, and carry a gun. What we really need are the type of people who work for Google and Microsoft. Technicians who can create databases to interconnect our various intelligence agencies, airlines and TSA.

In this case, all we needed were people to do their job and disseminate known information. But as we discuss in Ignorance of Power, agencies don’t like to cooperate. Instead, they see other agencies as the competition . . . not their colleagues. The reality is that it’s much more macho (and fun) to ride around in your helicopters or $200,000 inflatable boats with mounted machine guns. No one wants to do what it takes to really defeat terrorism. So, once again the government has failed and we’re all going to have to pay the price. We will all have to undergo intrusive bodily examinations.

But as we discuss in the book, you can harden a target, but do nothing about terrorism. If we are all treated like felons and thoroughly searched, terrorism in the air will be greatly diminished. But that won’t stop terrorism. They will just look for softer targets such as trains, buses or shopping malls. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab had a visa to come to the US even after alarm bells went off all over the world. That is the problem.
