As many of you may have already known, Henry Cuellar issued a statement yesterday on this web page ( ) concerning 2011 cost of living (COLA) adjustment for Social Security recipients. First off he stated that there would most likely be a ‘hold’ placed on any increase for our seniors in 2011. Of course, they did not receive any increase on their monthly checks in 2010 either. His statement on this was “this is simply unacceptable and we need to find a solution”. Hello, Henry. Why didn’t you do something about it? You are in U.S. Congress!

Another quote from Henry. “Social Security is the sole income for many retirees and COLA is an important part of helping them keep pace with inflation.” About the only truthful sentence in his entire statement!

But then he went true to form. He rendered a heartfelt appeal to the seniors and others by giving them and us a lesson on COLA. And, according to Henry, the COLA showed absolutely no increase in the cost of living year-over-year, therefore the seniors are as well off this year (or at least breaking even with last year) since the cost of their needs is virtually the same. That’s enough to make you puke but unfortunately is a liberal Democrat’s view of logic ... just lie or mislead to save your butt at all cost.

Before you vote for this pitifully inept person again, you should ask him a few questions and demand straight answers. These questions would be in response to his statement that “The current situation is a result of economic conditions, not Congressional action or inaction”. Let’s say he is right about most pricing. Start by asking him what is the greatest concern and expenditure for a majority of elders, particularly those well advanced in years? Give him the answer because obviously he doesn’t know or doesn’t want to fess up otherwise he presumably would have mentioned it. Their main financial concerns, particularly for those who rely on Social Security as their only or primary source of income, are doctor bills, medical facility bills, and bills for certain prescription drugs. Now ask him if the costs of any of those just might have skyrocketed over the past year? If you finally get him to answer honestly (yes they’ve risen significantly) then ask him, as a Representative of the U.S. Congress, why you did not seek to introduce a bill to, at minimum, drop the COLA for this year for the seniors of his district and the nation and base their increase on the inflation of their most pressing expenses?

We’re not done with Mr. Cuellar just yet. Earlier in his ‘political statement of explanations’ he did mention that COLA was the reason for no increase in monthly Social Security benefits either in 2010 or 2011 ... the second year in a row (a record) with no increase since the introduction of COLA as the driving force set by Congress in 1975. He’s technically correct. We have had very little inflation over the past two years, when averaging the volatility, using the government parameters for calculation. So, that brings us to a couple of more questions for not only Henry but the majority of our Congress. The first question should be quite obvious. Henry, if there was no inflation in 2010 why did you support a 2.8% increase in the salaries of all 2.9M federal employees nationwide and generously give each Representative and Senator in Congress a $4,100 increase across-the-board? You couldn’t make it on your former salary of $169,300 per year plus a cadillac healthcare policy and benefit package that only a sheik in the middle east might envy? What exactly did you do to deserve those increases, besides start driving our country into the abyss of bankruptcy? How much do you plan to give yourselves this year? There are many more questions but you can fill in the blanks.

If you truly love that form of government an type of politician, then vote for Henry. If not, you have an obvious good choice in Bryan Underwood. This isn’t an endorsement of Bryan any more that it’s a rebuke of Henry. You need to seriously figure this out for yourself before you make that vote.
