Under Texas Local Government Code Section 352.081, a burn ban can be instituted for a maximum period of 90 days the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) number is at 575 or higher or if the governor has declared a disaster.

As of Feb. 24, the KBDI mean (average) for Wilson County is 366.5414. This can be a bit misleading though because the KBDI only measures surface moisture. It does not account for the dead brush above the surface, which can still ignite regardless of the wetness of the soil below it.

The 90 days is about over - Does that mean the burn ban will no longer be in effect automatically after 90 days or do they need to vote again to make it OK to burn??

For once I agree with Rock'n chair (on a few points). Why 90 days? - Should be a week to week call. I can see why the burn ban is required after no rain for awhile but today it is safer than ever after all the rain so why 90 days - I have 9 acres full of trees and have allot of leaves to get rid of or the lawn will not grow proper come spring.

For the next 90 days? Are they using a crystal ball to see into the future? What happens if we get some good rain, like, eh, last night??

And, if it's ok to burn trash in a burn barrel for some folks, why not all folks? What difference does it make to the fire danger whether or not a person has garbage collection service? It makes no sense.

How about use some damn common sense in these matters? If it's too dry to allow burning, just say so and then enforce it equally. If it's too dry for me to burn yard debris in a barrel, then it's damn sure too dry for the guy down the road to burn his trash just because the garbage trucks don't come down his road.

Burning trash should be illegal anyhow. It stinks, pollutes and in this day and age should not be necessary, even out in the country. If you live that far out, you probably have a tractor, or should, so just bury it or haul it to the dump. Period.

Unless otherwise permitted by the Wilson County Health and Public Safety office, the only burning allowed to take place in a burn ban is household trash -- not yard waste -- in a screened burned barrel. This type of activity is limited only to daylight hours and in unincorporated areas where trash pickup is unavailable.

Stupid Question - Does the burn ban include small residential fires like small piles of leaves?? I ask since I have seen it happening all over recently.
