Harlingen, Texas, December 15, 2010: Our politicians have been pontificating on the subject for years, but the drum beat usually dies with the end of election campaigns. Now that the Tea Party movement has put candidates and elected officials feet to the fire, perhaps cost saving ideas will blossom into a movement and some meaningful action can take place. We are speaking about the elimination on two agencies that nobody can link to any declaration in the Constitution... the Departments of Energy and Education.

If you can remember back to those glory days of the Carter Administration, you may recall the Department of Energy was created in 1977 to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Now that really worked out well for us, didn’t it?

Since that time we have wasted several hundred billion dollars and funded the salaries of more than 16,000 federal employees for an agency that has completely failed in its original mission and has become a major obstructionist in the energy production of the United States. For the upcoming fiscal year, the Energy Department wants another $24.2 billion, none of which will go toward reducing anything except perhaps our own ability to drill for domestic oil.

The Department of Education has proven itself to be nothing more than a protection agency for bad schools and poor teachers. Look at our worldwide ranking in education if you dispute that statement. We have been on a rapid educational skid downward from the day that agency was formed.

It is very questionable that an agency, which required a budget of $80 billion for fiscal year 2009, needed a budget of $162 billion for FY 2010, but that is the number of tax dollars you have provided. If they double down again for FY 2011 the agency will need to build some extra storage room just to hold its money.

Back room whisperings are that the Department of Education plans to send $20 billion of its cash to help bail California out of the money pit it has dug for itself. Quick math will show anyone that using an eighth of its tax dollars to bail out a state with only a 12th of the population isn’t a very equal distribution of money the taxpayers have provided. But, it is a back door way to soften up the sting of a massive state debt.

How about this for a suggestion...Since the Administration and California both seem to think that the way to prosperity is to spend your way out of debt, why don’t we just let the Golden State keep spending its own gold?

While that action is taking place, why don’t we look a lot harder at this agency that has so damaged our educational system and see about sending it to never-never land.

Just think what that would do to our deficit. With a savings of $186 billion plus each year, many of us might still be alive to see this country get back into the black again.

The Tea Party did a great job of showing the public how our elected leaders were spending and borrowing us into becoming a debtor nation. A lot of that borrowing from China and everyone else with a bank balance has gone into funding two agencies that should not even exist. If the Tea Party put on a full court press to defund these two departments you and bet your last buck Congress would get the message.
