Texas Attorney General Announces Final Settlement with DIRECTV
San Antonio, TX -- The office of Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott announced today that a final resolution was agreed upon with regards to the lengthy national investigation into DIRECTV, a national provider of satellite television services. As a result of the final judgment, consumers across the country who filed a complaint can expect to be paid restitution. In addition, the company has been ordered to follow a list of new consumer protection requirements.

According to the settlement, the California-based company is required to pay restitution to eligible DIRECTV customers and $13.5 million to several states. In Texas, DIRECTV must pay restitution to all customers who file service and contract complaints with the Attorney General’s Office between Jan. 1, 2007, and June 9, 2011. If DIRECTV’s proposed remedy does not satisfy the aggrieved customer, the company must inform the customer that a claims administrator is available to mediate the disagreement -- and provide the customer with a mediation enrollment form.

Hundreds of consumers in Central Texas have filed complaints with BBB about DIRECTV in the past year. The complaints filed with BBB generally allege problems relating to contract terms, billing disputes, advertised offers and discrepancies concerning pre-paid programming. BBB advises that consumers review the following tips to avoid having issues with satellite and cable providers:

-Get all details in writing -- Anything confirmed with a salesman, installer or customer service representative should also be written for customers in a signed agreement. Always double-check that any verbal promises or discounts are listed in final customer agreement signed by the provider before you pay or agree to a contract.

-Read the terms and conditions carefully -- Pay close attention to the terms on introductory trials, offers, equipment costs and the cancellation policy.

-Mark your calendar -- Make note of important dates on your calendar such as when you need to cancel introductory offers, your contract expiration date and when your bill is due. This will help avoid late fees and unexpected charges.

-Check every bill closely -- If there are any billing inaccuracies, the sooner you spot them, the better. Even if you have your account set up to automatically charge your credit card or debit your checking account, always review your monthly bill for any new or unusual charges.

-Research the company with BBB. Check out any company’s BBB Business Review at bbb.org for free before agreeing to a contract. Look for any complaints the business has received, government actions or advertising issues.
