The year saw a number of local people in the ag industry honored.

These include:

•Brad Cotton, South Central Texas Independent Cattlemen’s Association Trailblazer Award.

•Kenneth, Russell, and Scott Boening of Boening Brothers Dairy in Floresville, named 2010 Members of Distinction by Dairy Farmers of American Inc.

•Dennis Hale, Texas AgriLife Extension Service agent for Wilson County, “Outstanding Beef County Extension Agent” award.

•During the 83rd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, two East Central FFA members placed among the top three in the nation. Cassidy Jordan was the winner of the zoology division of the Agriculture Fair. In the Agricultural Communications contest, Shelbie Thames placed third individually.

The Wilson County News “Agriculture Today” also gained recognition when Ag Reporter Pat Kopecki won three honors in 2010.

Kopecki accepted the 2009 Texas Farm Bureau Excellence in Journalism award, for a city or market of under 50,000 population, in late January.

In July, the Wilson County News again garnered awards, this time on the national level -- winning a first-place award for the National Animal Identification System series and an honorable mention for a greenhouse gases series, in the Suburban Newspapers of America editorial contest.

In addition, the Mesquite Traildrivers held a 45th anniversary celebration April 10 in Adkins.
