Cicero Alexander Rust Jr.
Cicero Alexander Rust Jr. of Blanco, Texas, was born Sept. 28, 1915, in the Hill Country near Buzzard Roost, southwest of Blanco, and passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010.
On an evening threatening thunderstorms on May 7, 1936, Cicero eloped with Olla Danz, the daughter of Louis and Ottilie Dora Jacoby Danz of Stonewall and Johnson City, from a bluff on Miller Creek near Johnson City, to the home of Justice of the Peace Latham, whom the sweethearts had to awaken, due to the late hour, to perform the marriage ceremony.
Cicero ranched indeed. He drove livestock to market by horseback in authentic trail drives, whether to the railroad station pens in San Marcos or to the Union Stockyards in San Antonio. He shipped cream from his milk cows by train to Kansas. He sold chicken eggs. Cicero picked cotton for processing at the cotton gin mill in Blanco. Primarily, he raised Angora goats and Black Angus cattle.
During many fruit seasons, “Mr. Cicero” -- as Lady Bird Johnson nicknamed him -- was found in the retail room of the Gillespie County Fruit Growers in Stonewall.
As a youngster, Cicero attended the Mount View School, located within a stone’s throw of his childhood home, southeast of Blanco.
Cicero served as an election judge for many years in Blanco County. A prayer warrior, Cicero was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blanco, which he joined by baptism on Jan. 11, 1976. Prior, at the Blanco United Methodist Church, he sang in its sanctuary choir, served as a trustee, and championed membership and evangelism.
Blanco County Judge Charles Scott proclaimed Sept. 20, 1986, as “Cicero and Olla Rust Day.”
Cicero was a friend of the local Emergency Medical Services; the Blanco Volunteer Ambulance Corps presented him a plaque for his support in 1996.
On Aug. 1, 1996, the Forest View North Neighborhood Watch Association presented Cicero a Certificate of Appreciation.
On May 1, 1997, Mayor Kermit Roeder bestowed an Honorary Citizenship of Johnson City upon Cicero.
Cicero was preceded in death by his wife of more than 69 years, Olla Danz Rust, who passed away Nov. 30, 2005; his parents, Cicero Alexander “Doc” and Frances Wuest Rust; and his brother, Garland August Rust and wife Estella Martha Danz Rust.
Survivors include his son, Cicero Alexander Rust III. Cicero was “Grandpa” to Mike Moraign and wife Lacey, daughter Courtney, and step-son Josh; and to Sam McDougall and wife Jennifer Lauren and daughter Savannah. He is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces.
A celebration of Cicero’s life was held Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, in the First Baptist Church of Blanco with Brother Darrell Fishbeck officiating. Guitarists Trevor McGuire and Daniel Culpepper and pianist Vickie Pautz provided the music. Songs included “Mourners, Come to the Cross,” “Amazing Grace -- My Chains Are Gone,” “I’ll Fly Away,” “The Lord’s Prayer,” “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” and “Home on the Range.”
Interment followed in the Rust Family Ranch.
Henry Salazar Jr. of Floresville served as a pallbearer.
Memorials may be made to the Floresville Academic Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 281, Floresville, TX 78114.
