Jaguars claw way to district opener win
Floresville junior guard Erica Hernandez looks for an open teammate during the Jaguars’ 57-53 win over Gregory-Portland Jan. 7.
FLORESVILLE -- After a long nondistrict schedule that began in early November, members of the Floresville Jaguar basketball team finally got going in District 30-4A competition, as they hosted the Gregory-Portland Lady Wildcats Jan. 7, and handed them a 57-53 defeat.
The Lady Wildcats scored the first 3 points of the game with a shot from beyond the arc, but Floresville responded with a 3-pointer of its own from junior guard Erica Hernandez. From there, the two talented teams traded points throughout the first period. Brittany Aikens and Destiny Amaro joined Hernandez in scoring points for the Jags, and Floresville held a 14-12 advantage after the first stanza.
The back-and-forth action continued throughout the second period of play, as Lauren Milton, Katie Moore, Shelby Leinneweber, De Havalan Watts, and Amanda Montoya joined in the Jaguar scoring effort. The Lady Wildcats kept things close, though, and found themselves trailing by just 4 points at the break.
After halftime, the Jags and Lady Wildcats returned to the floor with renewed energy. The pace of the game quickened as both teams displayed their above-average speed down the court. Moore started the scoring off for Floresville in the second half, and Montoya cushioned the lead with 2 more. The Jaguars managed to outscore the Lady Wildcats once again in the third, and held a narrow 42-37 lead over the visiting team after three.
Aikens scored the first 3 points of the final period for Floresville, and Moore pitched in a pair of free throws. Gregory-Portland gave a solid effort in the final period, and outscored Floresville 16-15. It was too little, too late for the Lady Wildcats, though, as Floresville hung on for the win, 57-53.
Hernandez led the Jags in scoring with 13 points on the night, followed by Aikens with 11 points, and Amaro with 9. Moore scored 8 on the night, Montoya tallied 5 points, and Leinneweber was good for another 4 points. Annielyn Felux, Watts, and Caitlin Gillum each scored 2 points for Floresville, and Milton dropped in a free throw.
The Jaguars were scheduled to travel to Victoria Jan. 11, and will be back at home Jan. 14 to face Beeville Jones.
