POTH -- After a less than spectacular start to its season, the Poth Pirate basketball team is now firing on all cylinders, and has rattled off three straight district wins.

The Pirates began their district season by taking on the then-18-2 Karnes City Badgers. Poth came out strong against its rival, and held a 15-8 lead after the first period of play.

A defensive struggle raged throughout the second period, as Poth was held to just 8 points, and the Badgers, to just 7. The halftime lead belonged to Poth a 23-15, but the Pirates were feeling anything but comfortable with the lead.

Following the break, the Pirates returned to the floor and had a strong scoring performance, outpacing the Badgers 14-7 and taking a 37-22 advantage into the final period of play.

Poth led by as many as 18 points in the contest before Karnes City began its comeback. Lorenzo Salinas and Clayton Labus led the Badger comeback with 16 fourth-period points and narrowed the Pirate lead to just 3 points. Denver McKinney dropped in a layup for Poth to put the lead back to 5 points, and time expired with Poth winning 48-43.

McKinney was the Pirates’ leading scorer in the contest with 12 points, followed by Tommy Waclawczyk with 10 points, Billy Korzekwa with 8, Jesse Dugi with 6 points, and Jacob Caloss, Josh Jaskinia, and Oscar Ramon with 4 points apiece.

The Pirates then played their second district game of the season Jan. 4, as they traveled to Natalia.

Though playing on the road, Poth made things look easy, as the Pirates handed the Mustangs a 63-23 thrashing.

McKinney was once again the Pirates’ leading scorer with 16 points on the night, followed by Waclawczyk with 9 points, and Dugi and Korzekwa with 8 points each. Blaine Moczygemba scored 7 points for Poth, Ramon had 6, Tyler Kallies scored 5, and Jaskinia chipped in another 4.

With two district wins to their credit, the Pirates went on to host the Dilley Wolves Jan. 7, as the two teams battled to remain unbeaten in district play.

Dilley came out strong in the first period and took a 19-13 lead, and both teams turned in a 9-point performance in the second period, giving the Wolves a 28-22 advantage at the break.

In the second half, however, things were much different. Poth had its best scoring period of the game with 16 in the third, while simultaneously holding Dilley to just 3 points. As the teams moved into the final period of play, Poth had assumed the lead and control of the game, as the Wolves trailed 38-31.

The Pirates continued to apply pressure in the final period and once again outscored Dilley. The Wolves were held to just 7 points in the final period, while Poth added another 15, giving the Pirates a 53-38 win over the visiting team, as well as sole ownership of the district’s top spot.

Korzekwa and Mc-Kinney led the Pirates over the Wolves with 10 points apiece, followed by Dugi and Waclawczyk with 9 points each. Poth also got points from Jaskinia, Moczygemba, Kallies, Ramon, Caloss, and Aaron Friesenhahn.

The Pirates were scheduled to continue their district schedule against Jourdanton Jan. 11, and will host Three Rivers this Friday, Jan. 14.
