POTEET -- After enjoying two weeks off for Christmas break, the La Vernia Lady Bear junior varsity basketball team returned to competition Jan. 4 with a 40-13 win over the Poteet Aggates.

The Lady Bears came out strong to start the first period of play and tallied 16 points, while holding Poteet to just a free throw. La Vernia backed off in the second period, scoring just 3 points, but held the Aggates scoreless for the period, and took a 19-1 advantage into the locker room.

“Our defense did an awesome job only holding Poteet to 1 point at the half,” said Coach Jessica Elder.

Following the break, the Lady Bears returned to the floor with a renewed spirit, and scored another 15 points, while holding Poteet to just 6. The teams each scored another 6 points in the final period of play, and the Lady Bears easily won by the final score of 40-13.

Morgan Mikes led the way for La Vernia with 10 points against Poteet, Kassandra Raygoza dropped in 9 for the Lady Bears, and Kelsee Penshorn was good for another 8. Cat Reed scored 6 points for La Vernia, Valerie Petry scored 5, and Jackie Imming tallied another 2.

With the win, the Lady Bear junior varsity team improved its season record to 8-5, and is now 3-1 in district play. The Lady Bears were scheduled to face Lockhart Jan. 7, and were to return to district play on Jan. 11 against Sam Houston.
