Soil, water conservation contest deadline nears
Students of Wilson County are encouraged to participate in the 2011 Texas Conservation Awards Program by entering the poster or essay contest.
The poster contest is open to boys and girls, ages 12 and under. The district’s expected artistic content of a poster is for a student to graphically demonstrate the importance of conservation of soil, water, and related renewable resources within the realm of their community environment, said Patrick Moczygemba, chairman of the Wilson County Soil and Water Conservation District.
The two choices of poster themes for students to choose from this year are “Forests for people -- More than you can imagine,” or “Conservation habits = healthy habitats.” The posters will be judged at the local soil and water conservation district level, with winning posters sent to area-level competition. The state winner will be selected from the winners of the five area competitions.
The essay contest is open to children in two age categories -- 13 years of age and younger and ages 14 to 18 years. The contest’s theme, “Why soil and water conservation is important to my future,” provides participating students with the opportunity to express in a written format the importance of soil and water resources and how they are linked to providing food and clean water.
The essays will be judged on the local district level, with winning essays sent to the area level. The state winner will be selected from the five area winners.
Deadline for the poster and essay contests is Tuesday, Jan. 25. All schools in Wilson County will have the information needed. Applications are also available at the Wilson County Soil and Water Conservation District office, located at 1106 10th St. (U.S. 181) in Floresville.
The Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board and the Association of Texas Soil and Water Conservation Districts, in cooperation with the state’s 216 soil and water conservation districts, annually sponsor the Texas Conservation Awards Program to recognize and honor those who dedicate themselves and their talents to the conservation and wise use of renewable natural resources.
