The 81st Judicial District Attorney’s office, which includes Frio, La Salle, Atascosa, Karnes and Wilson Counties, is accepting resumes for an Assistant District Attorney position. The selected candidate will work directly under the Border Prosecution Unit Initiative dedicated to Human Trafficking/Human Smuggling. Responsibilities of the position include working closely with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, felony intake, preparation of cases for grand jury, negotiating pleas and representation of the State of Texas in pretrial proceedings, as well as in criminal bench trials and jury trials in District Court. All applicants must be a graduate of an accredited law school and licensed to practice law by the State of Texas and have a minimum of fifteen (15) years prosecutorial experience and extensive felony trial experience. As the new year gets under way, so does the South Texas stock show season. The Bexar County Junior Livestock Show concluded its show with an auction Jan. 8. This week, Karnes County youth will shine in the ring beginning Thursday, Jan. 13. The Karnes County Youth Show concludes with an auction, set for Saturday, Jan. 15, at 3 p.m.

The broiler show will begin the event in the Karnes County Youth Show Barn, located off U.S. 181, between Karnes City and Kenedy. The day’s events include judging of turkeys, followed by the lamb show and the goat show.

New this year is a handicraft show that will be judged at 4 p.m. Exhibitors will have the opportunity to exhibit their original crafting techniques, such as needlework, painting, drawing, general machine, wood crafts, and woodworking. Other categories include photography, welding, and a miscellaneous category that includes puzzles.

Judging of commercial steers kicks off Friday’s events at 8 a.m. The day will also include the hog show, the breeding cattle show, and the halter steer show.

The homemaking sale will be Friday at 7 p.m.

Saturday’s events include the homemaking awards presentation at noon and the buyers party at 1 p.m., prior to the auction at 3 p.m.

The youth of Wilson County will have their opportunity to shine in the ring beginning Tuesday, Jan. 18, with the horse show. The weeklong event concludes Saturday, Jan. 22, with the Wilson County Junior Livestock & Baked Food Show Auction sale at 2 p.m. (See the Jan. 19 issue of the Wilson County News for complete schedule.)

The stock show season continues into February with two majors shows in Fort Worth and San Antonio and the final show within the county -- La Vernia.

The 54th annual La Vernia Junior Livestock & Poultry Show is planned for Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 24-26, in the La Vernia Chamber of Commerce grounds located off U.S. 87.
