St. Ann Catholic Church on U.S. 87 in La Vernia will be open at 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, for a prayer vigil for Sophie Sparks, who is battling cancer. Everyone, even if not Catholic, is invited to attend and pray the rosary for Sophie’s healing.

Her father has asked that as many people as possible pray the Lord’s Prayer for her at 8 p.m. Sunday, to unite in prayer for healing for Sophie, as the Bible states in the gospel of Matthew, “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in their midst.” Those unable to attend are invited to join in prayer wherever they are at 8 p.m. Sunday.

“We will be reciting the rosary,” said family friend Shannon Kosub.

Kosub said the Lord’s Prayer will be said for Sophie, and the remaining prayers of the rosary for all children battling cancer.

“I want to express why the rosary is so important to Miss Sophie,” Kosub said. “The ‘Our Father’ and the ‘Hail Mary’ are two of the first prayers she willingly learned on her own, and couldn’t wait to recite aloud. I have seen what just holding the rosary in her small hand has done for her. She has expressed the comfort that she finds in it.”
