FLORESVILLE -- The Floresville Jaguar varsity basketball team had its share of ups and downs last week, as the Hoop Troop dropped their Tuesday game with Victoria West, but then rebounded with a big win over Beeville this past Friday.

The Jags traveled to Victoria Jan. 11, but had a long bus ride home after falling 65-60 in a close District 30-4A contest.

It was an abnormally slow start for the Jaguars in Victoria, as the Lady Warriors scored the first two baskets of the game to take a 4-0 lead. Katie Moore drained a 3-pointer to put Floresville on the board, and then followed up with a second 3 to put the Jags up 6-4. As time expired in the period, though, it was the Lady Warriors in the lead, 21-19.

Victoria scored the first two baskets of the second period as well, but Caitlyn Gillum dropped in a couple of baskets to pull Floresville to within a point. Play continued to remain tight throughout the half, but the Lady Warriors took a 35-31 advantage into the locker room.

The Jags generally come out strong in the third period of their games, but their struggles with Victoria West continued. After scoring the first basket of the second half, Floresville allowed a Lady Warrior basket, and then sent shooters to the charity stripe. The Jaguars continued to trail at the end of three, 47-44.

In the final period of play, Floresville looked like a comeback may be possible as it narrowed the Victoria West lead to just 2 points, but the Lady Warriors found a way to get it done this night, and handed the Jags a 65-60 loss.

Brittany Aikens and Moore led Floresville in scoring with 14 points each, followed by Hernandez and Gillum with 13 each, and Amanda Montoya with 6 points.

On Jan. 14, the Jaguars hosted the Beeville Lady Trojans, and may have vented a little frustration from earlier in the week as they rattled off an 80-54 win.

As the game began, Floresville came out on fire. Hernandez drained two 3-pointers to start things off, and Moore added a third to make it a 9-0 game right out of the gate. Beeville finally got on the board to make it a 9-2 contest, but the onslaught continued by the Hoop Troop. After the first eight minutes had expired, it was Floresville leading 34-9.

Things got better for Beeville in the second period, but the Lady Trojans were still outscored by the Jags, as Floresville took a 49-23 lead into the break. Hernandez scored the first 2 points of the second half, and the Jaguars held a 66-38 lead by the end of the third period.

Beeville scored first in the final stanza, but back-to-back-to-back baskets from Aikens, Hernandez, and Moore quickly squashed any hopes the Lady Trojans may have entertained of a comeback. When it was all said and done, it was Floresville with the easy win, 80-54.

Hernandez led the Floresville scoring barrage with 22 points, followed by Aikens with 17, and Shelby Leinneweber with 15 points. Moore scored 8, Gillum was good for 7, and freshman De Havalan Watts dropped in 6 points. Lauren Milton and Destiny Amaro each scored 2 points, and Jessica Castro sank a free throw.
